I had a bit of a shock today when I rang Devitt Insurance Brokers to renew my motorcycle insurance.

I have been with them for two years after a row over bike insurance with MCE.

My policy with Devitt/Zenith included European bike cover with multiple trips in excess of 90 days was just what I needed and I thought they were a good company after recommendation by a friend.

When I received the renewal notice I checked through it but could not find any reference to the European cover. I rang with a view to renewal but needed to ensure that the policy was the same as in previous years and the European cover was still included.

You can imagine my annoyance when after pressing the Devitt representative I discovered that the European cover was no longer included. If I had not asked and not checked the policy details, I could have been in trouble if I had been stopped by police or had an accident.

I asked if the policy could be changed to include the European cover but they said they were not able to provide it.

I am annoyed that they had not told me about this and the only notification I had about a policy change was from Zenith to tell me that there would be a restriction on the theft cover when my bike was within 500 meters of my home unless it is kept locked in my garage.

Insurance appears to be a minefield for the unwary, I previously took another insurance broker to the Financial Ombudsman and won my case when the cover provided was not what I had asked for.

I have now insured with eBike insurance who provide 365 days European cover. I hope they are good, I have tried them after seeing good reports on this forum.

I use Carole Nash - great support when required (don't ask...) and good value.

They use the AA centre in Lyons to coordinate "rescues" - ('nuff said)

Twice they have flown me home or back to collect the stranded bike (Hey - It's a Harley - what do you expect??)..with hire cars either end as required - It's no contest - even if they weren't the cheapest - which they are- I would still go with them - they are that good.

Respect to Carole Nash

Cheers

Dave

Just a caution regarding motorbike european cover and travel insurance.

Years ago we used to organise motorbike holidays for our bike club.

One of the guys was unfortunate to have an off which meant he had to spend several weeks in a French hospital.

Having paid for insurance to cover such an event he was not too bothered about the costs and just concentrated on getting well again.

The repairs for the bike were covered but the company who he used for his travel insurance refused to pay up.

Although he had told the insurance company he was going away on his motorbike it appears he was only covered to ride a bike up to 125cc. (That bit of information was hidden away in a great wad of small print)

It appears the policy was designed for folks going on package trips and will only be riding small bikes that are available for hire.

So, if you are taking a motorbike abroad it's worth checking exactly what cover you have.

Thanks Dave,

Carol Nash were recommended to me by a friend a few years ago but when I rang them they couldn't provide the cover I required.

I heard they were good for classic bikes and ones such as yours, maybe next year I'll give them a call. I'm all signed up now with eBike and hopefully won't need to find out how good they really are.
