I wonder if some kind folks out there with a sat nav that does size routing could help please.

You may know that my husband Brian died in 2010, within a few weeks his daughters husband was confirmed with prostate cancer. He underwent chemo but as the drs had refused to listen to his complaints about back pain for so long the chemo was to late. He has been given 1yr with light chemo (he has had his heavy chemo) and less than 1 without.

He has always had an ambition to walk Hadrian Wall and has decided to combine that with fund raising. However because of his health he is unable to walk so Rowena his wife and friends will push him in a wheelchair along the walk.

I have offered to go along in CB so that they have somewhere to stay at night and use as a moving base, however he is a big brute and l would be grateful for route planning in him as l am sure the roads will be a tight squeeze hence my request for anyone who has a sat nav that will do size planning if they could help. Also any general advice about the route if you have walked it or driven it anything to make it easier. The walk is planned for end April start of May.

Waynes Walk

Many thanks for any help and advice.
Caro

Hi Caro, sorry to put a downer on your plans, but I don't think you'll manage Hadrians wall path with a wheelchair.
I did the route a few years ago with 3 other guys and my wife supporting in MH.
A lot of the route is on narrow field paths with many stiles, also quite a bit of rough terrain which could also be very boggy in wet weather.

I'm afraid a lot of long didtance paths are not really suited for wheelchairs, the better options might be ones that predominantly use disused railways or canal towpaths, such as Transpennine trail.
Hope this helps,
Steve.

Hi Steve sorry been trying to get hold of Rowena, unfortunately l kept running out of time before to late at night to speak to her.
Update is they are trying to get hold of an all terrain wheelchair a friend is sorting the walking route out where they need to go on roads to avoid bad patches. Once it is all done l will put up the walking route and hopefully someone can help with the road side planning Razz

Hi again Caro, funnily enough I've been researching the net looking for a coast to coast challenge for me and my son to do on the bikes this year, and low and behold came across a Hadrians wall bike route, that may be the one to solve your problems.
If you google sustrans hadrians wall route you will find out more - sorry I'm useless at adding links Embarassed
Also not up on GPS stuff, but hopefully this info might put you 'back on track' as it were Wink
All the best,
Steve.

Just had another look at website so thought 'c'mon Steve don't be lazy have a go at putting the link' - so here goes...
http://www.cycle-routes.org/hadrianscycleway/

There is GPS details on the site.
The route starts at Ravenglass and goes up the coast to Bowness to join the line of Hadrians wall, so I suppose you could just start/finish at Bowness.
Hope this works/helps
Steve.
