How big is your van. Laughing I think the max tonnage on French roads is circa 44 tonnes.

You can rent and drive ANY size in France as long as your driving licence is valid for the vehicle.

I am aware that there is at least one bridge (dont remember where) across the river that has a 3500Kg weight limit.

I have to say this is a very strange question, what exactly are you wanting to know??

Payload is the weight you can carry on or in a vehicle and I am struggling to think of a reason to ask that particular question.

Any chance you could clarify please

Hi Stitch

I think I understand what you're asking. Idea

I think you want to know how much payload you'll need on a rented 6 berth van to cover you for a holiday in France?

As a rough guide you'll need to allow 75kg for each adult passenger and a pro-rata amount for each child. The driver will be covered by the MIRO total as will a full tank of fresh water and fuel. Thereafter you'll need to allow for food, clothing, bikes and all the other bits and pieces you'r likely to carry. Bear in mind also that MIRO figures don't usually include things like awnings, tow bars etc. so they need to be considered as part of your payload.

For instance, one adult passenger plus four kids would total about 225kgs, add 50kg for clothing and bedding, 15kg for a small dog and 10kg for food (you'll only carry enough food for two or three days at once). an awning (if fitted) might add 40kg or more and pots/pans/crocks will add at least 10kg. So we're up to around 350kg already without anything like BBQs, gadgets, tools, bikes etc.

Personally I'd regard 500kg as a minimum payload for a 6 berth 'van, much higher if all the passengers are adults.

If you lend someone £20 and never see that person again, it was probably well worth it. Wink

Go for the biggest you can afford and feel comfortable driving. I would say a 4.5 to 5 tonne vehicle then you don't have to count calories. Very Happy

I heard that you get charged for omissions, am I correct in thinking that each time you go past a toll road, you will be charged. So would Payload and omissions affect the charge greatly. I have read so many different things and joined this board to help understand all the ins and outs. Which if i may say seem endless.
