All my Jpgs are mostly when I had Paint Shop Pro 5 installed but recently ones are just jpgs. The Paint Shop Pro 5 shows a special sign and if I send them to someone else I know you can 'open with other programs' I have not installed anything on this new laptop but wonder what will happen when I transfer any of the photos which are at the moment on a external hardrive. Confused

They will probably open with Windows Picture and Fax viewer which is already on your Laptop.

Whereas most file types are propriety to the program they are normally used with, for example a docx file is designed to be used with MS word and word should be used to open the file (others can be used). jpg is a published international standard for the format of the data in a file representing an image and not tied to any software, therefore most imaging applications support the format and can open the file, even most web browsers can be used to view a jpg/jpeg file.
