Having told Mr Sky I no longer wish to pay a monthly subscription for his never ending repeats (especially on Discovery/Eden/Nat Geo etc) I am now looking for a decent Freesat HD PVR
Top of the list is a Humax Foxsat either 320 or 500GB hard disc.
You have already answered your question perfectly - Humax are in my opinion the leaders. Had mine since launch and wouldn't swap. So good that I have now bought one for the father-in-law who, despite the beginnings of dementia, has found a dream to programme.

Yep I understand humax are very good..... I have the goodmans hd pvr and also seems quite good, after gerryd mentioned them and I rubbished it lol I just use it from time to time to provide hd tv feeds when asked to.. just might be worth looking at that unit as well....
The Humax can also be configured to run off a single lnb cable. It can still record 1 channel and you can watch another channel (provided the channel is on the same polarisation type thing), gives you about 25% of channels. So you can easily take it away if you want.
It does have a few 'issues' that bug me.
1. If you are recording a program and pause it at the same time then when the time of the recording is due to end the pause ends! i.e. if say recording Restoration Man and watching it live, phone rings so press pause. If you haven't caught up with the live picture by the time the recording ends it will jump to live TV!!!! So if you want to watch a live program and record it, watch it from the recording menu.
2. You can't see a view of a program from within the guide.
It doe's have some good features. Like you can network it to watch BBCi Player and ITV player. You can also 'hack' it to add extra functionality. Like be able to watch Standard Def recordings via a network connection. Copy music and photos to it over a network etc....
It may be worth a look at the Dreambox (DM800HD). The 8000 is the flagship, it's mega pricey, and geared towards the enthusiast but if your after the best it may be worth a look.
Agree very much with what Ched999uk said, the Humax Foxsat HDR is a superb piece of kit, we ran it ff a single LNB feed for months and now have dual feed. It is reliable and versatile although the niggles are there as he mentioned. The hard drive is in two sizes, we have yet to get anywhere near filling it!
We cannot use some of the features as things like BBC iPlayer are not available here so it cannot run that for us......
We bought it from John Lewis - they are reliable and will price match other stores (although not internet sites )
Gave up Sky about six months ago & bought the Humax box. No regrets. The Humax box is not quite as slick in operation as Sky HD, but is a good alternative especially when you think of all the money you will be saving in long term - more money to spend on going away in the van!
I need something like this as well. We have a Panasonic TV (TX-P42G20B) with built-in Freesat which works well. I have now linked it to our router to enable I-Player & You-Tube, etc., but need a recording facility. You can link a hard drive to this TV & I was about to buy one when I discovered there is only one Freesat tuner. This means that if you have two programs you want to watch that are on at the same time you can watch one, but you cannot record the other one. The TV does have two tuners but one is Freeview whilst the other is Freesat. Thus you can only record what you are watching, or with the TV not in use.
Is the Humax the best answer for us, or is there a simpler solution?
Also, on a related topic, has anyone replaced a quad LNB with an octo LNB? Is it as simple as the adverts suggest?
