I've received an invite from my son to try the beta version for free. Obviously I can ask him - though I suspect he's only just got it himself - but it would be useful to have other views. The idea certainly interests me.

Bitcasa

Thanks,

Phil

$10/month for unlimited "cloud" storage sounds too good to be true, doesn't it ?
I would only use it as an online back-up, not as primary data-storage ... I'm waiting (as a MacMan) to see what iCloud brings ...

The beta version is free at the moment and there is a free (though limited) version promised.

As I understand it, this is a quite different concept from other online storage.

Not ever heard of it until today, $10 a month for storage doesn't really appeal to me at all.

For normal backup of your photos and documents I just use something like this as a start point. At least you are in control and are not relying on a foreign company whos stability you are unsure of. It could close down overnight and take your data with it.

I assume any referrer who gets a sign up will get a free month subscription or additional benefits.

From what I've read so far this is something new - and very unlikely to close down overnight. But I would really like to hear from people who've used it.

I repeat, it's currently free.

I already carry 4x1Tb usb drives around with me and my two Macs. The problem is, when I'm on the boat for months at a time and in the MH months at a time the backup discs, perforce, are in the same place as the originals; bad practice. Hence cloud storage allows off-site backups when data-connections permit. Up unitil now I've baulked at the cost.....
