I can't see a thread on this but in the February MMM is a letter entitled "Gas bottles on Ferries" where it is stated that DFDS told a motorhomer that they could not take on board a 13kg gas bottle but that they could take 2x11 kg ones. The Editor's reply states that DFDS terms and conditions state the maximum gas permitted is 2x11 kgs. However all I can find is this, see clause 10.8, which says nothing about size of bottles, only that the maximum gas that can be carried is 47kgs. We have just changed over to 13kg bottles and are booked twice on DFDS this year. I will phone them to confirm this but is anyone else aware of this?

10.8 Passengers intending to travel with gas cylinders should inform the shipping line at the time of booking and not just prior to boarding. Gas cylinders must be adequately secured against the movement of the Ship; the supply must be shut off at the cylinders during the entire carriage; the integrity of the cylinders must be intact, at the commencement of the carriage. The maximum possible amount of Propoane/Butane which can be carried is 47Kgs. Oxygen/Acetylene gases may be carried only if carried for maintenance work. One acetylene or propane/butane cylinder up to 35Kg gross mass and one oxygen cylinder up to 40Kg gross mass may be carried but the cylinders should be less than 1m in height and disconnected from any equipment proir to boarding the vessel. No other class 2 or 3 flammable gases or liquids are permitted in the same vehicle.

Hi Shingi

Did you really mean to post the entire contents of an encyclopaedia!! Shocked Laughing Laughing Laughing

You should still be able to remove the bits you don't want - or I'll remove all but Clause 10.8 for you. Wink

As for the gas, I think the letter writer must have encountered an ill informed official. It's clear enough and a 13kg cylinder is well withing their limits.

I think the confusion arises here due to DFDS's acquisition of Norfolkline's Dover-Dunkirk route. It's the T&Cs for that route that you've copied into this thread.

The Harwich-Esbjerg route has a totally different set of T&Cs, here. If you look in Section 5, you'll see the limit on that route is indeed 2x11kg. The letter was about the Danish route.

(Interesting on the naming of that file that someone in DFDS clearly had finger trouble about what year it was...)

Paul

Me - I book as a a motorhome, that should tell them all they need to know.

I travelled with them (Dover - Dunkerque - Dover) in December with 2x13kg propane - no questions about gas asked either way, other than "was it turned off?"

That's arguable. They need to know if you're carrying gas-specifically mentioned.

Really? - I would argue that it is entirely reasonable to expect that just about any motorhome would be carrying gas bottles of some sort.

I can't remember the last one I've seen that wasn't.
