My front discs and brake pads need renewing on my Hymer B584 (2001 Ducato 14 LWB 2.8 JTD) and I'm ringing round getting prices. I keep being asked whether the discs are solid or vented. Unfortunately my van is stored miles away and, to save me a journey, I wonder whether anyone knows the answer to this question.

Thanks

Ian

If you phone the main Fiat dealer (comercial) and give your reg to the parts man he will be able to look it up for you, get a quote for them as a base price to work from. you may be surprised, or not.

Sorry to take so long to thank you Cabby but I followed your instructions to the letter and found that they are vented. The Main Dealer said he'd do me a special price of £194.00 incl. VAT

Herein lies a cautionary tale which I will share with you. I have my vehicle serviced at Halfords AutoCentres and have found them very good. However one must bear in mind that the Managers are under extreme pressure to find other work for which they charge a bomb to make up for the excellent servicing prices.

On this occasion it was new front wheel bearings and front discs and pads. Price - just over £700.

Following my visit to the main dealer today, I phoned a local motor factor who quoted nearly £100 less. When questioned about the difference in quality he told me that the main dealer probably got it from them.

Anyway the final result is that the small garage who does my annual MOT is going to do the whole job (discs, pads and bearings) for £330 including VAT.

I suppose the moral is that if you're prepared to do a bit of research there's an awful lot of money to be saved.

This is a cautionary tale for all of us even with your cars. Work with in the motor trade ( on the service/repair side) is very up and down .There are some (but not all ) unscrupulous companies out there. if they are looking for work things like brakes, shock absorbers, link arms ect are all money making jobs. Always go to a garage you trust and always ask to see the parts afterwards ( they are your property).
