can any 1 tell me the best way to get sat tv fitted in the motorhome will be travelling in to europe so wats the best set up and how do i get it cheers
the very best system is the Kathrein CAP910.... if you have a look in outdoor bits there's various systems to tempt you.... when you have had a look at the various models feel free then to ask any questions you have.... the smaller the unit you have the less the coverage you will have but any system will work in the uk its when you travel to spain italy etc you start haveing issues.... hope that helps you...
As Clive states, your choice should be based around where do you want to receive TV, what channels do you need / want and budget.
Domes are very popular nowadays as they can be used in windy conditions and cheap, however they are subject to restrictions due to their inherently small dish size (30-45cm usually) whereas to have the best chance of receiving uk channels such as BBC1 etc "down South" such as in Southern Spain then you really need to be looking at a large dish (85cm+) with auto skew, gps etc and coupled with a good fringe receiver (if the system does not come with one already)
We do indeed have a huge range on Outdoorbits to choose from, and a few handy tools to help you narrow down your choice
There are some very clued up people on here (Satandtvguy I think he is called springs to mind) so I am sure you will get the help you need.
Do you know where your likely to want to use it? They do range in price a lot from £50 for a suitcase job from Lidl or Aldi to £2500+
We opted for a Camos Dome three years ago which I think was including installation and a Max View free to air box about £1300.
For receiving the normal English channels, BBC1 etc it works all over the UK, all over France but breaks up around the Spanish border or much further south than Milan in ITaly. It worked as far East as Fussen in Bavaria but we didnt go any further. It will tune into other satellites though but for different channels.
The only other issue with a dome and I guess a dish is you have to be clear of trees. We dont find this a problem as we tend to use Aires, CL sites or wild spots where they are generally open but for reasons I am not sure of the few campsites we have used in Europe tend to be full of trees to provide shade so it can be a problem. Obviously the suitcase job which stands on the ground can have an advantage here as you can move it around.

If you dont want to spend a fortune its dead easy to set up a dish on a tripod etc. Is ANY TV programme worth £1500???
Yes it takes a few minutes longer but cost MUCH less, like fifty quid (if you are using an old style sky box) All you need is a few metres of cable, a couple of connectors, tripod, sat finder, (cheap) compass, cheap inverter if you want to save money and get 230V TV and sat box rather than the hugely expensive 12 versions and a few minutes of your time.
A freesat box can be had for a few quid if you want more channels but dont forget you can get all the BBC radio channels via satellite as well!!!
Its dead easy, if you would like details PM me for a phone number and I will explain further.
Just think how many ferry crossings/camp sites nights/meals out/other goodies the £1500 cost of a satdome will buy you.
I appreciate that an automatic system is a lot easier but at what cost????
I will now await the fury of those who have spent a fortune on auto sat systems and are convinced I am wrong and the ONLY answer is an automatic system.
Nah I think you have a good point. IF you can get away with a £50 job then do it. At the end of the day if its no good you can chuck or sell it on Ebay.
I splashed out on a dome over a free standing £50 job for two very good reasons though
1. There would inevitably come a situation where its chucking down and I want to watch telly and I cant get it to work and I would end up hoofing it into the next field.
2. I would come out of the van for a fag in the middle of the night having consumed a case of Leffe and fall over the thing and break my neck and / or hoof it into the next field.
I quite like just being able to press "On" and it works although there has been much cursing and angry reversing and manovering when trying to find a gap in the trees on occasion!

I opted for an 85cm Autoskew system because I like the idea of pressing a button and let the system find the satellite instead of struggling on a wet day to get a picture , each to there own but I've had enough of setting up dishes and f.....g about just so SWMBO can get Corro so its money well spent IMO
Having owned a manual wind up Kathrein, an automatic Oyster 85 and now a crystop 85 internet I would never go back to manual sats. There some great deals around without having to pay top of the line.
well , would like to put some mustard on that sausage as well
I tried out this damned tripod-thing which I purchased from a
local discounter. one cannot imagine how many swearwords it
took to manage fixation of this grrr-device , finally I handed it
back to the seller ( still upset.....)
after some days of "conclave" white fumes were raising over
our heads , and we decided : must be an automatical device.
It became an automatic Caro-Digital with square antenna.
We have used it for a year since , and never thought that we have wasted those 2000.- Euro
nevertheless , if one is technically fit he/she will probably come along
with a manual system , those camp-antenna table-systems for 100.- quit are craps in my eyes. for use in areas down south of europe or
even northern africa , an 85cm antenna is best , mid europe a 65cm
dish is sufficient.
my regards
Jan

I was just pointing out that with a bit of time and effort its possible have a satellite TV system for not a lot pf money.
I fully understand that some people like the convenience of a "press it and watch" system. BUT and its a big but, that sort of set upis going to set you back well over a grand whereas "my" system was less than a hundred. yes its a bit of a faff, and yes its even more of a faff if its pi ing down. (note no asterisks!!)
I have a sneaking desire for a fully automated system but at heart I am a tight fisted git (according to SHMBO) who does not think ANY TV programmme is worth well over a grand
That is, of course, a highly personal view. Others feel differently. That does not make either point of view right or wrong, just different.
