Hello

We are soon to be receiving our new Motorhome & are slightly confused as to what we need to buy to fill & empty our water tanks. We will be staying on various sorts of sites from fully serviceable pitches to the more basic ones. Can anybody advise what we are gonna need?

A hose, some will say food grade. I use a garden hose. Others swear by their watering cans, some even use water roller type containers. I have also seen people carrying water in plastic bottles or containers and filling up that way. Take your pick. I carry quite a lot of hose and park near a tap if I can, if not I drive to the tap every few days to fill.

Enjoy your new van, Alan.

Hi, welcome to MHFs

You dont say what size of van you have, that effects what you can carry and how much space you have.

We have a 25m hose on a reel, the standard garden type. Many peeople say you should use a food grade hose, but it a personal thing. We dont drink water from the tap unless its boiled (in tea or coffee) why drink cold water when you have wine!

WE also have an adaptor that fits into the tank filler neck from Heosafe which replaces the cap and you connect the hose to it. This saves you holding the hose in the tank. You do need to put about 4" of hose on the inside of the fitting.

For waste we have a large round, bucket thats not very high so it will fit under the van. We empty the van usually over a drain if not then we use the bucket. The bucket is also good for winter as you dont want your waste tank freezing, just leave the drain open.

I can recomend paying the £12.50 to become a member as you will reap the benifits back in savings and you get to chat to us lot (thats worth at least 50p Laughing

hi

wouldnt worry to much re waste, you can always run the van to the waste drain on the site.

the water fill needs a little more thought, some m/homes have filter systems, and you need the adapter to use this type. it should be supplied with the van. new or used.

it would help if you gave make n model.

Hello

Thanks for all your suggestion, we are getting a Swift 580PR, we are quite short of storage space as we have an end lounge.

Your best bet here is to listen to what the salesman says about this on the hand over.
Some people use a watering can, aqua roll, blue hose from tap.
I have an aquaroll and a 12v submersable pump that has a bayonet fitting on the out side of the van.
I have a Hose lock fitting on the water intake which is permanantly in situ and fill from the aquaroll with the pump.
I only take the aquaroll with me when we are on a site for a time, the rest of the time I just have a container with a large neck, a 20 litre container and refill from there.
Drinking water is separate I never use the vans internal tank, although some do without trouble.
The waste water is off loaded into a Fiamma waste container and dumped in the waste water tank at a campsite, of if wilding when we get home.
Some people dump in a roadside drain or country hedge row to me it does no harm but some will no doubt disagree. But I have been a few farm sites where they do not see a problem with this.

I can't really say what you need, but can say what we do.

for filling fresh water i have a couple of hose pipes with various adapters for taps etc and hose lock connection, on the other end is a hose lock connector that only lets water pass when a trigger/nozzel is inserted, so i connect to the tap and unreal the hose to the filling point, turn the tap on, then return and connect the hose lock nozzel, then push the nozzel into the water entry point on the van, wait and then turn the tap off when full.

As for waste, our hymer has a large bore exit point at the side of the van with a leaver to open it, if over a drain i just open it to release the water, if the drain is close but not directly under the exit point; i have a 7 foot ish length of large bore pipe which connects and use that. if on a service pitch where the drain is dedicated but usually too far for the large bore pipe to reach, i use a long standard hose (dedicated for waste), which connects to the water exit point and sits permanently in the drain and leave the waste tap open, i connect it using this home made adapter < link here >

Provided you have a "normal" water filler, as in very similar to the fuel filler point and not one of those daft devices that require a "special" fitting and a filter cartridge you have to keep replacing, then one of THE most useful bits of kit you can carry is a plastic watering can!!

The reason being that on a lot of French sites/aires they use a very odd elliptical tap and I have yet to find anything that will fit (and stay) on !!! Even in the UK such a basic bit of kit will allow you to collect water from just about any source.

As had been said before a decent length of hosepipe (25m) I also use a standard garden hose and just flush it through prior to use rather than go for one of the (much more expensive) "food grade" type.

If your the sort of person who constantly worries about "germs" then go for a food grade hose, but many (inc me) dont and I have yet to hear of someone catching dengy fever by using a garden type hosepipe Laughing Laughing Laughing

For the most of the time in UK and Europe you only need 2 tap adapters the small screw on and the next size up and if these are the hoselock type just put a pair on each end of your hose and then when its finished with just coil it up and lock the 2 ends together in drips in van.
