My understanding is that using asterisks to mask swear words is against the rules.

I must admit I do think it's rather a silly rule on a forum used mainly by adults and, of course, we see the use of asterisks going unchallenged regularly.

I did it in the bar a few weeks back in a post which was not aimed at anyone. it offended no one and no one reported it. It was posted as a bit of fun. I was warned against doing it again. Since then I have noticed asterisks being used frequently.

I post this because I am perplexed. I do not want to start an argument so can people please keep the tone of any contribution they may make civil. Thank you, Alan.

Hello Alan

There is no rule prohibiting "asterisks"

What there is is a rule that says :

8. Please do not post words or URLs that are censored by the forum software by adding spaces, dots, or substituting characters or by any other means in an attempt to circumvent the censors.
Please contact us if you feel a word or URL is unjustly censored.

What you did in the thread that you refer to is you broke that rule and to compound it you bragged about working around the forum software so that you could post a version of the word you wanted to use .

I just asked you, in what i thought was a pleasant way, not to break the rule again.

Mike

I really see no need for censorship of swear words or astrixes to disguise swear words in the bar.

Its over the top IMO

Yet people continue to do it and it's not a problem.

Bragging? No I merely observed that the word, which is an ordinary, everyday word had been censored. It surprised me.

You did ask me not to do it again and I agreed to that. I am now wondering about others doing exactly the same thing, Alan.

Is it OK to whistle "Ohhh £#€& it" like the Clangers did in one episode?

Hi Alan

I am not sure what you mean when you say "Yet people continue to do it and it's not a problem." Do What? : evade the word censoring software ? As I have already said using asterixes is not breaking any rules

As far as I know I and the other admins are the only ones that would know if a member had tried to evade the forum software that censors words that the site owner has added to the banned list. If a word is used that is on that list the forum software substitutes ***** in place of the word. The admins can, if they wish, see the word that was used.

If a member decides that it is necessary to use a word that may offend but substitutes asterixes, or other symbols ( thank you Stanner Wink ) in place of the word they have not broken that forum rule.

I am making no judgement of your or anyone elses need to use whatever words or language on our site, I was just upholding that specific rule.
