if it's not dirt on the actual key mechanisms, it's most likely the membrane that has the electronic circuits - that would mean replacing the whole thing (pricey? )
Trevd - he says it's a laptop, so not so easy! You could use an external keyboard, but not a very suitable remedy.
just a thought? Is the system set up for a UK keyboard?

As far as I know, the only motorhoming Oxford United supporter in Bognor.
Try an external plug in keyboard and see if the problem persists. If it does then the problem is other than the keyboard!
I has a similar problem with a netbook a while back, one firm press on the offending key pushed it back into its proper location and all is now fine 9worth a try, the key didnt LOOK to be out of place!)

It is correct letter. Set up for Anglaise UK. Sistem (apologies but correct spelling letter is missing) restore worked for 24 ours (anoter missing letter) but problem started again. Confused.
Try re-installing / updating the keyboard driver by going into Device Manager. If that makes no difference try changing the language attributed to the keyboard and see if all the keys function after that. If all else fails and you feel sure it isn't a hardware problem then re-install Vista using the original system disk or a recovery disk / partition if you have one.
I note it's H & Y not working - these are next to each other and maybe would suggest a membrane problem? others around them seem to be OK, but do 6 & 7 work (and the shifts ^ and & ? these are directly above the Y key.....

For most laptops you will find someone has posted a video of how to take it apart.
If you don't want to tackle this yourself /haven't got a friend or relative who will do it for you - you will have to pay someone to do it.
If cleaning doesn't work, replace the keyboard - I rember having to do this on an old Dell - I think I paid £20 for a keyboard on eBay.
I still think the balance of probablity is it is a keyboard fault. And yes, I do realise it is a laptop, but laptop keyboards are often replaced - it is generally an easy job once you have opened the case
Only other thought is (and I'm Mac only these days, and havent had a Windows machine since XP), can you interrupt the boot to give you a screen you can type on before it loads windows? Then if it is a hardware fault the keys won't work. If it is a windows fault the keys will work.
