It's almost time to upgrade my mobile phone, and whilst an iPhone may be nice I can't afford one on my current tarrif.

I'm currently paying about £17 per month with Orange, and I'd like to keep my number.

I use the phone mainly as a diary and to do list, I text more than I phone people, I do find the camera very useful, I have never needed to go online with it,

Although not having gone online with a moby, I do like the idea of having Google maps, and being able to check out MHF, or look for things to do in towns while away, it's not essential.

So obviously new phones are coming out almost daily, but of the ones out now and free to upgrade or switch providers, do you peeps have any ideas or suggestions and links for ones I might look at.

I have recently moved over to a Motorola Atrix on Orange for £20 a month including 100mb data which is sufficient for me.
It's an android based phone and does everything an iphone does and the majority of the apps are free something you cannot say for the iphone

Go talk to the orange shop
The 3gs or 4 are old models now and are good if you dont need an all singing one but still have all the iphone functions.

One to look into then, although SWMBO will not let me increase the monthly payment, and to be honest I'd like to even lower it if possible.

Thanks mrbricolage

By all means visit the Orange shop to check out the phones in the flesh etc but once you've decided then call 150 on your Orange phone, then press whatever number it gives for "If you're thinking of leaving Orange" then barter. Forget their standard tariffs, you should be able to get what you want including inclusive calls, mb, etc. for less than you're paying now. I have done this each time and they almost pay me now and give me more calls, texts and mb than I could ever use.

If you are thinking of using the phone as a GPS device the Nokia maps are free to download for their phones and can be used off line without any costs, great when overseas as the maps cover Europe. you do need a recent Nokia phone to make use of them but Nokia website gives info on the ones that you can use the maps with.

Hi Kev.
I have just been upgraded free on my minimal 02 contract of £5.99 a month. They asked me which of several phones and I chose the Nokia C3-01 as I have a multitude of Nokia chargers and adaptors.

It's a basic phone with WEB capability and a reasonable camera and I can check e-mail free when it 'sees' a Wi-Fi signal.

Ray.

I suppose I should mention (although it must be obvious by now Embarassed Embarassed ) I am without doubt the worst in the world for getting head around which is best in either phones or computers, there are just to many variables for me I can use them OK but getting the best for what I need and want to pay, ugh.

I like the idea of GPS being offline though too, and maybe then I can geo tag my photos of where we did actually pull up for a cuppa instead of trying to remember 6 months later.

Been with Orange in it's various guises since they were Rabbit phones (back in the early 90s). I've had the LG Optimus One P500 Android for about 8 months or so.

My package includes

200 Anytime minutes
200 Loyalty Minutes
UNLIMITED Landline minutes (i.e. calls to UK landlines)
300 Anytime Texts
500 mb mobile browsing
for £14.90 ( + VAT but recoverable as I'm registered)

I also get free unlimited Orange broadband on my landline thanks to a loyalty deal they offered a few years ago, another reason why I've stayed with Orange. (We have this free in Berkshire and only pay £5 per month for the same in Fife, since my daughter also has an Orange mobile - don't ask me what tariff she's on but I know it includes a gazillion texts!)

I pay an additional £6 per month (non-VATable) for Orange Care Premium, which I have used several times over the years, damaged or faulty phones replaced with brand new on next day courier and their admin charge always waived.

Now that Orange & T-mobile share networks I get to use a lot more of this package than I used to as I get a better signal in more places, including our bases. I can also use this phone to make voice calls via the WiFi Liveboxes even if there's a weak or non-existant phone signal, also I can access the internet via the Livebox WiFi without eating into the 500 mb so that's all left for when I'm mobile.
