We'll be in the Vendee, Fr. this summer during the Olympics and my wife is a fanatic, to the point where she is considering a Roadpro dome system for the MH.

We are already booked on to the pitch in the attached photo, and as much as it is difficult to tell from a single image, would the trees at the rear of the pitch pose a problem to line of sight to the satellite, or would the elevation be higher, or would line of sight be in a totally different direction in that area of France.

The trees are roughly to the east of the van and are the only ones near enough to consider.

The system would get used at other times, but it seems a bit pointless getting it specially to watch the Olympics, if it's not going to get a signal without driving off the pitch.

Thanks.

Difficult to judge, as you say, but I don't think the trees would get in the way.

The Vendee is not far south so a dome should get the BBC channels OK, if that's what you want.

A much cheaper and absolutely certain option would be a tripod mounted Maxview 65cm dish or similar. It's more of a fiddle to set up, but can be moved to "see" through the trees.

If you are booked on the site that suggests a longish stay - so the (possible) hassle would be worth it to ensure a good and stable picture. (Keep the Memsahib happy and you are happy!! Laughing Laughing )

Yes but, a tripod is at GROUND level, whereas a dome starts 10' above , better for tall hedges. Very Happy

You're an argumentative old sod Tony!! Rolling Eyes Laughing Laughing Laughing

If you are that picky, mount the dish on a 10' aluminium pole and clamp that to the bike rack . . . then the dish would start at 15' above! Wink Laughing

Some folk do exactly that, and it appears to work well. With a pole of a sensible length (say 6') the dish need not be removed when you move on. The pole is just slid down and re-clamped with the dish just below the roof line.

Probably want a smaller than 65cm dish for that though. Rolling Eyes

P.S. You don't get a better signal if the dish is a few feet nearer the satellite!!! Laughing Laughing Laughing

Thanks for your replies and seeing as Mrs Blizz is prepared to cough up the readies, I think I'll opt for the faff free version (if such a system exists) and go for a dome.

Inlaws bought a tripod mounted system and I tried for hours last year to get it set up, without success.

Have a word with Roadpro, they are very helpful. Your situation does not look as though there will be a problem.

I can't see a problem, but pictures can be deceptive! As long as trees arnt much taller than motorhome, you should be ok as the satellite dome will be looking up at 27/28 degrees ish anyway.

Give me a shout if I can advise you further.

I have a tripod mounted system and if there are any issues I put the thing up on the roof (secured with bungy straps)

Takes me about 5 minutes tops to set up. Its NOT difficult, but the first few times it does take longer. ( a signal meter is an essential though)
