Hi, we are planning a tour of Cornwall this summer and as I have been off work for a couple of days I decided to start investigating sites, areas etc (we already have a good idea of the route we want to do)
It appears that most sites want a minimum of 3 nights in the summer months ? Our plan was to stay just 1 night so we can cover a good area.
Has anyone else had a similar experiance ? I am a real organiser so my plan is to investigate the areas we fancy and then find approx 4-6 sites in each area and take their details with us and we will just call ahead. I am a little nervous of this though as we did that last year and very nearly got stuck !!
We are new to motorhoming (2nd season) so any advice on this kind of thing is really appreciated.
I don't plan to take our laptop with us (I don't want the kids playing on it when they can be getting muddy like kids should !) but I do have a phone with internet access.
The Caravan Club take single night bookings at any time of the year but you will have to book them well in advance (about now) as come summer they will be fully booked and turning up on spec is not likely to be successful.
Are you sourcing Club Sites? Seems strange, I know some commercial sites go that way, but to be honest, I would advise you to book just two sites one about midway, the other around Penzance way, IF, IF! you plan to drive to see the sights.
If you intend to use your bus pass(?) thats a different ball game entirely!
Really to reach the really beautiful places here you need to drive yourself, they ain't on the bus routes . The tourist traps are, St Ives, Newquay, Eden Project (£15 last year) Helligan, any national trust property.
Try to spend some time at the Lizard, perhaps walk a few miles of the Coast Path to Kynance . Take a walk around Pendennis Castle Moat, about 20mins easy, free! Motorhome friendly Car Park. Get yerself an IceCream on the point, add 20 mins to your walk, cause you'll want to just sit and take in the Carrick Roads and the Bay.
Ah Brilliant, we are caravan club members so I will concentrate on their sites, I wasn't aware of that policy so it is really good to know thank you.
In all honesty I have been looking for quite 'different' sites which seem so popular - 2 were already fully booked for August !! I am personally not a fan of commercial sites with amusements etc. I realise I limit myself by not wanting anything but basic facilities.
I did only want to get the first day or two booked up as we are heading to Cornwall from a festival in Dorset and I don't want to panic about where we are heading but I was concerned that we may get stuck once we are there, I am sure though with so many sites we will find one.
EJB pls can you explain 'Also try CL's and CS's from the two main clubs' sorry I don't quite understand what you mean ?
We won't be heading down as far as St Ives/Penzance as we did that part last year (not in MH). We will be using our bikes A LOT to get around and public transport for a change as we don't get the opporunity at home.
Any advice always appreciated, taken onboard and incorporated
Ah! so you havent discovered CL sites yet! They are certified locations. They are for Caravan Club members and there are 2500 or so all over the UK. They only allow 5 vans and are usually on farms or in rural locations.
They are brilliant! Range in price per night from £3 for a really basic one to £15 for one with EHU and maybe a shower. Even the basic ones have water and waste disposal but not EHU which you might not need if your moving on every few days.
There are some cracking CL sites in Devon and Cornwall. Check our blog www.hankthetank.co.uk Winter 2009/2010 and Southwest Tour 2010.
We dont have kids but when I was a kid my dad took me camping out in the wilds to these kind of places and I loved it.

We made the mistake last year of booking two sites in Cornwall in advance and paying up front only to be bitterly dissapointed when we got to them,in fact when we arrived at the first one we had a brew, checked the map and left as it was bleak,we've learned since then if we dont know the site we check it out first before paying
On our second Cornwall outing we had booked one night in CC site which cost us 23 quid next day had a little drive around and found a beautiful private site with sea views and electric for a tenner!!
The other thing we realised is at least with a motorhome you've always got somewhere to sleep and if a site is full just move on
We have some very steep hills in Cornwall so not the best area for cycling. If, however you are based near Padstow the Camel Trail is a wonderful cycle track which goes through Wadebridge and then on to Bodmin Moor - about 18 miles in all.
