Does anyone know the shelf life of one of those dry powder types as I have one installed in the MH which has a manufacture date of Jan 05.

There is no expiry date as I can see, so do I assume they will last indefinatley if not been used?

I don't think the dry powder type has a 'use by' date but it is recommended that you take it out of it's holder and give it a good shake because the movement of the MH compacts the powder down

I had one with a pressure guage fitted. When and if pressure was lost the instructions were to have it recharged.

I had it in my garage until sunday. I knocked it off the shelf and ended up with a garage covered in white powder.
It was at least 15 years old.

We have to have dry powder extinguishers as part of our business. They have to be serviced each year. If they are over 5 years old, irrespective of what the gauge says, they must be replaced!!!

So I would say replace it. In fact I would say that a 1.5kg is way too small. There is so much flammable material in a MH I would say best to have 2 extinguishers.

From time to time Aldi have them as their special offers at about £10. They are manufactured to the EU standard so are fine.

The service thing is a business Health and Safety issue and is only a check. It's a real money spinner for Chubb and other such companies. It does not apply to privately owned extinguishers and is not strictly necessary in that context.

In the home or your van it is worth giving them a shake up now and then and I change mine every few years just to be sure, Alan.

erneboy is correct it's a legal business requirement and it is a very simple check.
Personally I stick to the 5 year rule, but for the sake of £2 per year it's a good insurance policy.

I go along with the shake to loosen the filling, my school ones were replaced as described - every 5 years but the company responsible (who also did out fire safety training) said for home or automotive use as long as they are not damaged and are shaken every few months they last a lot longer.

BUT you would not know whether they would work if needed, so 2 is the minimum really "just in case".

Fire blankets are single use only as the fibres melt when used to shield from a fire, so if used, replace.
