Hi my Wife & I are looking to up date owe motorhome ,we are looking to purchase it in Germany or Italy as we want a left hand drive vehicle , I have a few questions & hope some 1 can help me as I am a Australian & come over to the Uk & Europe to see our 2 sons & there family every year for 3/ 4 months & travel the Uk & Europe.
(1) Is there any difference were you can travel with a motorhome that has duel wheels on the back as to single wheels & is there any more cost on motorways & rego.
(2) Is there any difference between a 3500 & over 3500kg vehicle as what drivers licence ,rego , motorway fees etc . you need.
(3) Is tere any way that we can rego & insure the vehicle were we purchase it in Europe. We are both 58 years old I have a Uk drivers licence & ancestral visa for 5 years .
If any one can help me with 1 or more of my question it would be appreciated Thanks Ketut.

As I understand it you will not be able to drive a UK registered vehicle over 3500kg irrespective of what licence you hold, if it isn't a UK licence.
Strangely you can drive an over 3500kg vehicle if it is registered in and you bring it into the UK from, another country.

Provided your full licence or international driving permit remains valid, you may drive vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes and with up to eight passenger seats. You will be able to drive for up to 12 months from the date of coming to GB. However, you may only drive large vehicles which have been registered outside GB and which you have driven into the country.
Thanks mate yes I do have a Uk drivers licence I was told last year there were some roads you could not take a dual wheel motorhome & or a 1 over 3500kgs in both Uk & Europe.

Hi there and welcome to the site.
Firstly it is possible to buy a LHD in UK, as I have one for instance as do many others, and would look to sell in UK, as many of us buy them as most of our mileage is done in the EU and to be honest, it is easier I think to drive over there in a foreign country with different driving conditions and laws to have the wheel on their side. In UK we know where we are and what we are doing, and where we live in Mid Devon, many of the 'roads' are single track and very narrow, and so you do have the advantage of getting over as close as you can as you are on that side....
1 - Yes there are associated costs for tag axles etc., on autoroutes etc., abroad, not so much a problem here in UK that I can think of except perhaps on some bridges that do charge. Villages in France do tend to have a lot of 3.5t signs for no access....
2 - There is a difference, to drive a vehicle in UK over 3.5t you do need I think it is a C1 licence, which you would have if you passed your test in UK before 1997, which gives you the right to drive up to 7.5t.. (But if over 70 you will need to have had a medical for that Class of Licence)(Looking back I see this last bit doesn't apply to you)
3 Insurance can be a difficult one, but some people have managed it, do you have any relatives back here in UK, who would allow you to use their address?
What sort of cost of motorhome are you looking at purchasing, layout etc., What are your preferences? (Ours might suit you - but do get back to me, we have not advertisd it yet, as we felt spring might be a better time!)
well , when touring Germany and other european states there are no
extra costs for for twin-tired vehicles. lenght is an issue in some countries as Austria ( GoBOX ). drivers license issues have been explained by my forewriters
Might be a good idea to purchase a MH in Germany , possibly prices are somewhat more reasonable than in other countries
when choosing Germany as sales-place , you may use this online market to gather offers ( in english language of course...) :
Hi Carol we are looking for a MH around 6/7 meters in length with alcove & either bunks at back or single bed with garage. From 2007 to 2011 with low ks if your MH is anything like that please email me with details price & photos please we will be over in the Uk in early April my email adress is rosscordery@ mac.com it has to be left hand drive. Cheers
Are you sure you want left hand drive? I worried about this when we first started touring Europe but now with a few long trips under our belt I actually prefer having right hand drive abroad.
As you sit high in the cab you can see over most things so overtaking isnt usually a problem. The big advantage of right had drive abroad is when you are on narrow roads. You can get very close to hedges or walls on your side of the road when passing oncoming traffic and when motorhoming you often end up down narrow roads.
I tend to set the sat nav to avoid toll roads but sometimes you need to use them. Our van is 3460KG and the only place we sometimes have trouble on toll roads is France. Sometimes they charge us Class 3 which is expensive but I usually just press the intercom button and say "Camping Car Class 2" and they change it without argument.

Last year in france we were talking to a fellow countryman of yours and he said the same thing you can see where the awning is when you get close to buildings.
He also said he bought his van from a dealer who agreed to insure it as a hire vehicle and then "hired" it back to him when he needed to use it. He obviously actually paid for the insurance.
The dealer kept it in storage for the times he didn't need it. The dealer did not hire it out to anyone else, but washed it and serviced it prior to his returning to the UK to use it.
