Just got a digital 12 volt terrestrial TV box for the van and wondered does the aerial have to be line of sight to receive the signal which means an outside one or can I get an indoor one.Not keen on poping another hole in the roof.....help.
My view is you will need an outside aerial of some sorts.... The DTV is a lower power than the old analog tv, any wide band aerial will do you.... There are various options...
An external aerial is always the correct recommendation for digital Tv. It is difficult enough getting a signal on anything other than an external aerial at home; even more difficult inside a tin box.
BTW, don't be tempted to pay extra for a "digital" aerial, there is no such thing. If it can get analogue then it can get digital.

Hi all the info sounds great, we just about to get first tv and aerial for our new motor home and checked out the avtex aerial on Amazon as suggested. Sounds silly but do you recommend getting a suction one or pole fitting. Having never used one not sure if just sticking on side of motor home will get good signal or whether you need to fit higher up.
Thanks

Came across this aerial, only 5" tall. at a boot sale thought I would give a try in the van on my Terrestrial box ...and wow it work great gets all the Spanish digital channels watched Top Gear in English today whilst setting it up ..just have to place it high in the sky light window, it has a magnet base so attached to a screw head.

Don't worry about cables in the roof, in the modern motorhome with a fully bonded roof they do not exist. The small stick aerials are a waste of time. You should use an external aerial and preferably wideband as it will not need to be orientated for vertical or horizontal signal beams.
There are plenty of aerials that can clamp to the outside of the van without drilling.
