Have started a new thread for 2 reasons

1) other is 3 pages long

2) after sampling my two efforts couldn't get my head round reading them Embarassed

Love sloe gin, have never made it before.

got the recipe/formula from a friend who makes her own, made first lot using 1/2 of our sloes froze the rest

Told by magoo, he, who likes single malt and rarely posts, that I had 'done it wrong' his golfing mate/ex chef had some on the course and i had used too much sugar. Crying or Very sad

Went off to Lanzarote with the sagalouts brought back more cheap gin.

Made 2nd lot with 1/2 the sugar

Tonight was bored so decanted some of each let him do the 'taste test' no prizes for who gets the winner right Laughing Laughing Laughing

they don't taste half bad mixed either hic hic

Never tried it - does it taste 'ginny' or is it sweet?
Where'd you get the berries to make it?

Hi

neither, it tastes like sloe gin Very Happy [nearest thing would be cough medicine, but its not!!]

google 'bbc sloe gin recipe' and use the bbc good food recipe

you need someone to point out sloes to you, they look like blueberries, and when you know what you are looking for they are abundant in hedge rows.

pick berries in early october and 'frost' them overnight in the freezer, then follow the instructions! Cool

drank mine this xmas, well 2 out of the 3 litres.

I used Aldi gin and very large glass storage jars, returning the end result back in to the gin bottles.

did a taste test last week at a friends, its even better after one year!!!

good luck with it this year,
remember to pick the berries in late sept early oct.

neil
warm insde, in cambridge

fabulous result!

Mine was made in 2005 and tastes like cough mixture. Used - ahem - for medicinal purposes only of course. Wonderful stuff.

I am making sloe vodka this year as well.

It's for those that say oh no thanks I don't like gin.

Truth is I doubt the vodka version will taste any different to the gin version.

My sloe gin is very good my tips are use a recipe with very low sugar freeze the sloes and bash them with a steak hammer or similar whilst still frozen (quicker than pricking them though you might want to do a risk assessment.)

Do people really still have sloes suitable for making slow gin almost in Feb?

You can make sloe gin any time, just pick the berries and freeze.

will have to secrete a bottle somewhere if I want it to last till new year at Kelso though Laughing
Used the BBC recipe, same as my friend's, for the first batch.
Frozen smashed berries and half the sugar for the second lot.
No taste of gin and most definately nothing like cough medicine, well not any I have tried.
Will try with vodka next year.
Will also try with damsons and want to try raspberry vodka but am meant to be cutting down on my alcohol intake.
Might take some to Newark with me too.

We had the good fortune/luck to stay at South Cliff Farm CL, Lincoln, in the autumn of 2011. The site is adjacent to the County show ground and all of the hedges are blackthorn......which produce sloes. Very Happy Very Happy
Tested the resultant product again last night....just to see that it had not gone off, you understand Rolling Eyes
