I cannot access internet, control panel sound etc unless I go into safe mode. I have run avg no help. I am not too hot with computers so if anyone out there can help I would really appreciate it

now the earphones won't work, sound comes from laptop speakers when earphones plugged in

Try a different set of earphones. If still not working go into control panel and then "sound" ( may be "audio" on some versions of Windows) and check that it is set up properly to use headphones. You can also try going into system>device manager to see if there are any problems showing up there.

thanks will try that, now have the original problem back as I turned off the laptop! I hate these things when they go wrong

Also worth trying a system restore back to a point prior to the problems, assuming you have restore points saved.

its not the earphones because when i run test they work and i have tried another pair. done the system restore in safe mode no difference cannot access system restore when not in safe mode.

You might find it worthwhile to download http://www.tuneup-software.co.uk/ and run the "1 Click Maintainance" repeatedly until there are no errors or the error count doesn't change.
The chances are, there are some registry errors. It is their nature for one error to cloak another so just running the once doesn't really do the job.
It is a free 15-day trial utility but it may get you sorted this time around without costing...
