Evry year on MHF as people start using their MHs again after cold weather we get a multitude of posts on failed batteries, burst pipe joints, water systems that don't pump etc etc and we who have seen it all before commiserate, offer advice to get people going, or to prevent it happening again.

This year I joined the ranks (again!) of someone who has had a post freezing failure.

I started to fill my water tank when I noticed several impressive fountains from my layflat filling hose. Mostly from the edge seam.

I have had this hose 20 odd years it is of the woven type and wasn't labelled safe for drinking water but it was compact and used in the old van to live under the passenger seat in the new van it went in the gas locker.

I reckon there must have been enough water left in it the last time I rolled it up to freeze in the cold snap a week or so ago. Rolling it up with a kink in the part still to be rolled prevented water escaping properly if the block was complete it would be obvious but I have noticed water retained in it before.

So I have added something else to my must ensure drained list.

Not sure if freezing is the culprit Frank.
In three years I've had three of this type of hose spring leaks in exactly the same manner as you describe.
Every time it was during the warmer part of the year.
I think it is more likely due to fabric fatigue where the hose is creased.

Same here, I also think it is fabric failure as the hose ages. I have been cutting mine shorter and shorter to reduce the leaks. Been fine again at the start of summer but developed more leaks later on before the onset of winter.

I purchased a replacement after nearly 10 years at the back end of last year.

I would have thought if it was due to freezing new ones would develop leaks as well.

Having observed many of these hoses being used on aires and at MH shows, as you do when idling the hours away, I noted that many of these hoses have leaks along their length. Perhaps it may be due to the tugging of them to get them out of their cassette.
Frank it looks like time to use some of that military pension and buy a new one Very Happy

Well it did last 20 years without a leak so it might be time expired but to fail so dramatically over 25% of its length doesn't sound to me like progressive wear.

Being very cold it would also have been brittle as you unwound it Frank. That's the time when fatigue does its business.

Bit like me these cold mornings.
