I cannot get on with these sattelite finders that beep at you or have lights that light up. I'm not good with lots of button etc.
Apart from a compass or the guy next door what can I use to find the appropriate satellite when in the M/H.

Hi Mike

It would help a lot if you gave some details of the equipment you are using. Advice could then be much better focussed.

Hi,
I use a Manhatten Nano - this unit finds the satelite you require ie Astra 2D etc, 4 sats are pre loaded into the unit

Astra 2A 28.2' East European Beam
Astra 2D 28.2' East UK Spot Beam
Astra 1 19.2' East European Beam
Hotbird 13.0' East European Beam

It takes seconds to line up the dish, the best birthday prese ever

Down side is the price, however its a lot cheaper than an auto system

You can find on ebay or as I did form Andy

There are some good sat finder aps for both Android and Apple smart phones.
They use augmented reality. Effectively you start the app select the satellite you want then it uses the camera view to overlay the satellites on your smart phone screen.
They are great, within seconds you know exactly where the sat is. OK then you have to align the dish but most smart phones have inclinometers built in so that takes care of the inclination. Then just use the finder app to identify a reference object to point the dish towards like a fence post tree etc. Then point dish at reference point. That will just mean you have a slight tweek to get best signal.

Thanks for the replies particularly the Manhatten one. I did rather notice this one amongst the others, was rather taken with it as a solution. Thankyou airstream.
Smart phones I dont do as I can only just about use an ordinary mobile to make and receive calls.
The dish is a free standing on a tripod which covers most of GB and Europe and the box is a Triax SR 110.
I am quite a novice at this.

I actually have an easy finder system. The one with the traffic lights on. Bought before I had a smart phone.
I find it fairly easy to use with one caveat. That is you do need to get the elevation correct. I tend to look round and see where everyone else is pointing their dishes to give me a clue to the direction. If no one else around use compass.
Then use the easy lnb traffic lights and it does seem to work very well. We do only use it if we can't get freeview. So it's not used very often.

My easy finder came from maplins in a kit with dish, receiver etc for about £70.

I have one of THESE which can be left permanently connected, it has a switch to pass the signal through without the meter being active.
I have it permanently mounted near the decoder where I can see it when setting up the dish, a Maxview Crank-up.
I normally get a lock on in less that a minute of dish twiddling.

Somebody lent me one as soon as you align with your chosen sat it shows that you are on the right sat, the sign strength and the quality of the signal.

The down side is it costs over £180 to buy.

I have a cheapo bought from Ebay, has a beeper AND a swinging needle display. (I wind the beeper down to silent and just use the meter)

Set the dish up pointing roughly east then just head slowly round twds south. First satellite signal you pick up is the one you want!!! Adjust the dish till you get the strongest signal (left and right as well as vertically, not much of a problem providing you leave the dish attached to its bracket when you put it away. The vertical alignment doesnt alter THAT much)l. Job done !!! total cost about 6 quid for the meter and about 4 quid for a cheap compass.

Why pay 180 quid when you can do it so easily for a tenner ???

Someone with money to burn Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

If anyone wants me to talk them through the dead simple process of lining the dish up with a meter then PM me for a phone number Wink Wink
