We're a bit new to using the laptop and wi-fi away from home.

Last year we tried using a dedicated dongle but found it quite expensive.

I've heard that at MacDonalds and the like you can pick up a free wi-fi connection.

Has anybody used this type of connection and if so how do you get connected? Do you have to get a special code or is it an automatic connection?

I probably sound a bit thick but whatever the subjuct we all have to start somewhere.

All advice appreciated.

I have a 3 dongle but I also wondered how you connect to a MacD's
WiFi?

Are you talking about France, or Europe in general?

In terms of Wifi at a Mc Donalds, it is usually a case of just turning up, selecting 'McDonalds' or similar unsecured network from your computer and then connecting. There may be a log on screen but these are usually very self explanatory, even in French, asking you to confirm any terms and conditions.

Unless you want to use a USB Wifi booster, don't expect to be able to connect in your van (although it is possible) you might need to go in and order a coffee which perhaps you should do anyway if you are benefiting from their service Wink

In general, using a long range Wifi antenna increases your chances of being able to connect to the internet in general using community / cafe / unsecured Wifi. There isn't a great deal in France/Germany though. We wrote about it here: http://www.europebycamper.com/2011/04/wi-fi-access-in-europe.html

If you use a Smart phone and just want to be able to use basic internet and check your e-mails on the go, then Vodafone offer a service allowing you 25MB a day for £10/mth here:
http://www.europebycamper.com/2011/06/guide-to-vodafone-data-traveller-data_01.html

I'm afraid to say that you do need a little bit of technical know how to understand it, but just ask if you are unsure and I'm sure someone can help Smile

France I presume?
McDonald's - wifi available inside (we usually have a coffee) and in the car park too. Free and your laptop should pick up the signal. No password needed. Just park up.

Campsites - many have free wifi usually near reception. Password needed from reception. Some charge per hour or day.

Office de tourisme - many will help with free wifi or where you can get it.
Internet cafes and libraries for a small sum.

Many large hypermarkets have wifi in cafe section for free.
