I am starting to back up a few of my fav DVD onto my lap top to save taking them with us.

The software used puts them into VOB format.

Anyone used a conversion tool or any other back up software?

Basically I cannot read/play them in VOB format.

have bought a 1tb clickfree backup portable storage device £89 on e bay my lad is in the process of downloading 257 films on to it for me apparently that will use just under a quarter of the storage capacity,
it seems that when its done all i will have to do is load and select the film and it will play through the netbook onto my tv with an vga cable, absolutely no idea what their talking about but i've seen it working and its good, saves the box of dvd we have at present just got to find a way to top the netbook up of the leisure battery

Hi

If you do not want the hassle of converting the VOB files you could download the VLC Media player ....it plays almost every format including VOBs.

You could if you wished use Windows Media Player to play the VOBs but you would need to obtain the correct codec first ...if it was me I would get VLC.

This sounds like a good idea. I have loads of hard drives just lying about.

On a separate note, Where is the best place to download films these days?

Legally or illegally?

There are many legal ways to download films but most of these stream the film to you so are just for watching rather than storing. If you are looking for legal downloads of feature films I am afraid you are going to be hard pushed to find any legal sites and sharing the location of the illegal places is also regarded as illegal so please do not be tempted do it publicly on this forum. Wink

Well legally of course! Laughing

I know there are peer to peer sites for music which I assume also do films but I suspect they are not only illegal but likely to be plagued with viruses etc but I just wondered if there was anywhere you could join that was secure and perhaps low cost.

I have iTunes so I suppose thats an option but its rubbish.

What about bbci player desktop? Presumably you could download BBC stuff, save it to a hard drive and play it through the desktop software later? In fact, Ill give it a try now!

EDIT: No it doesnt work. Well it does but you can still only watch stuff for up to 30 days and a max of 4.5GB

Hi

As Spykal says; vlc will play vob files but personally i used to use DVDFab to extract the films straight from the discs into the xvid format, saves a load of time and space, also had excellent features such as batch processing and settings to remove all the extras etc.
