A year or so ago I helped a charity set up half a dozen websites in Microsoft Office Live website builder. Our own website www.hankthetank.co.uk is also developed in it and took months to set up.

More info here http://ask.officelive.com/smallbusiness/blogs/team/archive/2010/10/19/announcing-microsoft-office-365-and-the-future-of-office-live-small-business-olsb.aspx

Last year they announced that they were stopping any new accounts being created and in the future you would have to migrate to Office 365. I wasn't too worried as I was assured by Microsoft that sometime in the future they would be able to seamlessly migrate to 365 but they were unsure if a charity would be exempt from payment. In any case the fee is just $6 a month.

I have seen a raft of emails this morning from worried clients where Microsoft are now telling everyone that the sites will be deleted at the end of April. The fee for 365 is still $6 a month but all the websites have to be manually re-created in the new site builder and from what I can gather it doesn't have all the features of the old one!

This is a massive blow for my clients who simply wont have the money to re-develop them. They do not have the skills to do it themselves. I have been using Google sites for a while now and prefer it. Its still free but to redevelop all these websites will take weeks and cost a lot.

Strangely I myself have not received an email from Microsoft so I wonder just how many users are blissfully unaware that they are about to loose their websites.

So If you have a website developed in Office Live then you need to think about moving it.

I kept all our charity’s docs etc on ‘live’. Went to download some existing excel sheets and was told, I was no longer able to view them until I upgraded to the latest release of excel. As I am running the 2007 version anyway, I wasn’t about to spend the charity’s hard earned cash on that.
Fortunately I managed to do a zip and dump of all my docs etc and they now sit with google. Closed my MS live account. Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

Thanks for the reply. I have tried all day to contact Microsoft. Its impossible. Two emails were rejected (one because their email account was full!)

I finally sent a general one to them but dont hold out much hope of a reply.

Discussed it on a couple of forums and the general opinion is what I though. Your basically screwed.

I have completely lost any respect for this company if they can let people down like this.
