Hi All
Just bought a ten year old Motorhome from people we know. It looks to be in great condition. We are considering buying a warranty. Is this a sensible precaution, what should we avoid and who offers a good deal?

Can you buy a warranty for a privately supplied vehicle?

Only my own personal opinion but an insurance type warranty will not be worth the paper its written on. On a 10 year old vehicle there will be more exemptions than items covered, the maximum claim limits will be paltry, the labour rates they pay garages will be insufficient and if the garage even want the work you will have to make up the difference. At the first sniff of a claim the warranty company will hide behind a 'fair wear and tear' clause. You will not even have a dealer to assist who could lean on the company to assist you.

My advise is for the cab side to have a newish MOT on the MH at purchase and if in doubt to it's mechanical soundness get it checked over by an independant person or organisation.
For the habitation side get the people you know to demonstate the various systems to you e.g. fridge, water and space heaters, battery charging etc.
Get a damp test done if at all suspicious.
All that should cost less than the first year premium of the warrranty you would have bought and at least been worthwhile.

You can buy off the peg warranties for a used vehicle.
I got a quote on a 4 year old Ducato wit 12000 miles on it and the cost was silly and not worth while.
Wear and Tear is also excluded for most parts so it in my opinion this will give the insurers a way out on most repairs.

I too am of the opinion that this would not be a good idea. Rayc has offered some sound suggestions as to what to do.

Why not open a ring-fenced bank account with a 'fighting fund' in case of future emergencies.

You have already bought it. so a big NO to a warranty insurance, best to put a weekly amount to one side in preparation for any bills.
I would get a damp check done as soon as possible.
What have you bought, as we can possibly guide you to what needs looking at.
However I am sure you will not regret buying it and will enjoy many miles in the van.visiting exciting places.

 Thanks

One thing I would buy is some form of vehicle breakdown/recovery cover.
A motorhome is an expensive thing to transport home if it breaks down.
Worth it for peace of mind.

The warranty that we had on our MH when we bought it was about as much use as a cat flap on a submarine......

our electric step packed up - "not covered"

we had a water pump problem - "not covered"

and so it went on, really not worth having IMO.

RAC Recovery or similar is worth having IMO - we do it via the C&CC because they have negotiated a recovery deal for vehicles over 3.5t and we have European cover......... (but we have never used it in an way in the 7 years we have had the MH Laughing ). BUT we were living in the UK then ......... Razz

So warranty NO ! but recovery cover (poor English Embarassed ) worth having as the cost of such a recovery is VERY HIGH even if only to take off a motorway.........
