It may sound a daft question, mine usually are, but I've not seen the subject discussed here or anywhere else.

I have a Garmin Nuvi 1490T loaded with the usual European maps.

I'd like to add some African maps.

Easy enough to purchase but I'm a little concerned that adding another wadge of countries might contaminate what's already there or exceed the limit. (how do you tell if you're getting close to that limit?)

Maybe I'll just play safe and buy another GPS!

To avoid this we just buy the plug and play memory cards.

This way you can load and unload when ever you want.

What I did a few years ago with my tom tom One, was to buy an SD card with the US and Canada maps on it.

Before travelling to the US I just took the existing SD card out and put in the US maps SD card and they system worked perfectly - It got me through central miami and out onto the freeway then to my destination with no problems.

If one of these is Morocco, and you do buy it, I'd appreciate an opinion ....

Sorry - it won't be Morocco. Much, much further south, namely Botswana and Namibia. Not really looking for street directions as there aren't many there Very Happy but useful for "distance to destination" type information when on a long drive or plotting the next stop.

Connect the Nuvi to a Windows PC with a USB cable and it'll be allocated a drive letter - you'll be able to browse it and see the amount of free space etc.

'City Navigator Southern Africa NT 2012.40' is a 109Mb file so there may well be enough space for it on the device itself.

You can either download it and copy it across or just get it on an SD card: the Nuvi will happily read it from either source.

Wow - 3rd post from a non-subscriber who only joined yesterday - that must be a record.

Thanks HoJo
