Snow chains or snow socks?

What do folks think are the pro's and con's of each system, and what good or bad experiences have folks had?

This has probably been covered before but this question will probably be in a few folks mind just now

We have chains and socks but we have never had to use them since we bought them. ( maybe on ebay soon lol )

Socks are good on fresh snow but you will need chains for ice , I also think you have to have chains in some parts of europe

You need Chains.

I am not a fan of the socks.

I saw them on a program last night where a snow plough got stuck. The Snow plough a 6WD had what looked like summer tyres and no chains. Plough was driven by man with 37 years of experience!

Hi Trev

I was VERY VERY impressed with the performance of my SNOWSOCKS last winter in 8inches of fresh snow on a hill in my car

tried to get up this hill & couldn't , so I went to put my snow chains on and by some freak got the hook stuck over the brake pad wear warning cable

had to jack up car to get at the hook to free off cable .

by now I was very cold and wet so at this point I just chucked on the socks and went up the hill as if on dry tarmac

leaving a flat surface behind from the car back axle as the snow was that deep.

saying that once the snow had started to ice over much later that night it was back on with the chains as the socks would have worn through on the crusty ice & tarmac

So in the right conditions they are great , & ideal if only required for a short spell on fresh snow , but they won't last for ever & can wear out in one trip if used incorrectly

Fair comment.

I have not used them, only seen them being used.

Hi all, can I second Trek,s comment. I bought snow socks for both car and M Van when stuck at Chatsworth in 2ft of snow at the end of 2010. Once the worst had been knocked down by a big 4x4 we were able to get down the mile long drive with no problems. Without managed about 6ft! Not a replacement for chains, but great in an emergency. I also agree they are not to be used on tarmac as they would tear apart very rapidly.
