Hi

Dead battery again.....main points:

1. I had a dead vehicle battery a few weeks ago.
2. The van has a smart charger but at that time this had been set (not by me) to the leisure only setting so was not charging the battery.
3. I had recently had the radio rewired to an always on setting so I do not have to have the ignition on to use it. I knew this would drain the battery, but felt confident as the van is on EHU at home and has a smart charger.
4. Charger not set to its default position (suspect the dealer as it had previously been OK) hence completely flat battery.
5. RAC sorted it and it was OK a few days ago when I looked....12.6(?ish)
6. Today I went to put some stuff in and the central locking would not work and it is down to 2,4.......flat again.
7. I will call the RAC again on Tuesday as I am out from 7 to 7 tomorrow (weather willing), but do not understand why this is.

Couple of questions:
1. Should I get the wiring on the radio put back to ignition only?
2. Am I going to need a new battery? The van is only just over a year old.

Any other thoughts welcome. Very fed up! I am going away in a 5 weeks and had hoped to get a weekend in before then.

If you havent already done so have a look on the swift talk forum, seems quite common on later Swifts.....of course its nothing to do with swift or fiat, just our stupid fault for thinking you could leave your van for a week or two in winter without using it.....i've just changed my cab battery on a vehicle not two years old.

Hi

We have same model 08 reg. and fortunately have had no battery issues - yet.
I contacted Swift because I was not sure whether the cab radio was supplied from leisure or vehicle battery.

They told me radio was powered from leisure battery so no problem with running down the starter battery.
I do keep my starter battery permenantly connected to a Ctek smart battery charger and the leisure one connected to solar charger or mains via EHU.

It might be worthwhile checking with the base vehicle manufacturer to find out when the base vehicle was made. Many MH chasis cabs remain in storage with MH manufacturers for a considerable period of time before being made into someones pride and joy. These vehs are then often sat on dealers forecourts for a while as well.

The fact that it is "only a year old" actually means it was registered as new a year ago. The date of original registration has little bearing on when it was actually made (and the battery fitted)

If "Your" veh is a few years old then its likely that the starter battery has been allowed to fully discharge a few times. This knackers batteries!! So it MIGHT just be yours is one of those. It might be worthwhile trotting along to a battery supplier and ask them to test it with a high discharge device.
