We are at present modifying our cycle carrier to take our tandem bike, only issue is that the wheels of the tandem extend 3 inches over the sides of the motorhome.

Are there any known regulations regarding carrying items which extend the width of the motorhome? Rolling Eyes

thought of getting a tandem myself.

Did you successfully modify your bike rack? I have a 4 cycle carrier which I'd like to use for 3 kids bikes plus a tandem for mum and dad (me!)

Think it could work? bit worried about weight - I suppose if I fork out I could get a lightish tandem. How long is an average tandem? more than the 2.3 metre width of our van?

Hi all, most of the customers i've spoken to with tandems use a quick release front spindle & whip the wheel out for carrying & less likely to attract the tealeaves, Steve

Our tandem is eight foot (2.44m) long and with the front wheel out would certainly be less than 2.3m. Still too long for across the back in our case, so always travels inside. We have just bought a folder which may go on a rack. But at £2.6k will probably also join us inside a lot.
Any bicycle that seats more than one rider in line is a tandem, but three man tandems are known as triplets. Colin.

This is what we do. We have a standard bike rack that we removed the inside rail from. We applied pipe lagging to the now exposed arms and we sit the tandem on this. You have to remove the timing chain to do this.
If you put the bike on with the rear of the bike to the offside without inline with the edge of the van tou can then turn the front wheel in line at right angles and secure it with a bungee. This way the bike only sticks out slightly on the near side and not at all on the off side. You couldn't do that with a tandem rail.
It still allows me to carry my solo too.
If what I've written is unclear I'll post a pic if required
