We are going on our very first trip to France and have booked a late night crossing (it's too late to say I wouldn't have started from there - I didn't know if that was sensible or not). Anyway, I don't want to drive far before gettinig some sleep. Can anyone recommend a safe place to park up for the rest of the night that is not too far from the port please?

Any other trip tips will also be welcome

Hi

I would park adjacent to the 24 hour cash and carry - but note that there are lorries there at all hours as the fuel is cheap!

If you are heading towards Bologne then the services are about 15 mins along the motorway. Always a few people O/N there.

Avoid the motorway services no matter what, even if there are other motorhomes or caravans, they may be there when you go to bed, but could be gone within minutes of you going to sleep.
Enter CITY EUROPE and follow signs for bus/coach parking, the parking is next to the police station and has cameras.
We have stayed, no problem.
Then depending on which route you travel, there is a free aire in the village of Cleres, just north of Rouen, with electric, or the village of Chamery just SW of Reims if heading the other way.

Good luck.

Hi

great idea re Cite de Europe but careful not to do what we did - causing a traffic jam when we tried to pull into the Cite de Europe car park and found it had a height barrier. duuurrrrr - dimbos.

What is wrong with parking at the ferry terminal at Calais. The car park adjacent to the Booking Office is always full of caravans and MHs

I second that. We always use the ferry car park for the first night or while waiting for the ferry back. just go round the first roundabout and go back in towards the booking office. Showers & toilets in the booking office apparently, we always just use our own. Always loads of other campers parked there.
