I'm on the verge of buying a motorhome for the first time and have some concerns about parking it in the driveway at home. The motorhome is 2.35m wide, the driveway is just 2.45m wide, giving only 5cm clearance each side Confused . That's for about 4 metres of the back-half of the motorhome, the front is fine so getting in and out of the cab is not a problem. Using the mirrors and a reversing camera (VST 6500) will I be able to accomplish this feat on a regular basis?

I'd really appreciate the views of some seasoned motorhomers on whether this is a good/bad/ugly idea. There are models with narrower widths ~2.2m that I can consider but most MH's are obviously around the 2.30-2.35m mark.

Your advice, please!

arg

Hi arg,

my drive at home is wide enough, but to get the van onto it I have to pass through a gate that also has only 5 cm clearance on each side. As I have no reversing camera I do it only by the mirrors, and that is no problem at all!

In fact, meanwhile it is easier for me to navigate this gate with my van than with my normal car... Wink

Best Regards,
Gerhard

Hi

Definitely correct to reverse on to the drive though in my opinion - use the mirrors and an assistant if required.

I prefer not to rely on the cam.

Take you time doing it - even if you have to have several attempts. Note however - is the widest part of the motorhome with the mirrors extended - have you accounted for this?

Hi Arg,

We have a similar problem, I have to navigate up between my garden wall and the wall of the house next door, I have a reversing camera but I prefer to use the side mirrors, as the reversing cam doesnt let me know where the 2 bottom corners of the van are. I also have a piece of wood on the drive, when the wheels get to it then I know it is time to stop.

Confused
Yes, I know just how you feel.
I have a Chausson which is 2.24 meters wide, as against the 2.18 of my previous motorhome.
I had just got the hang of reversing out with the old one, when I changed van. The few cms. differnce IS a difference.
Given the layout of my entry to my garden, and the number of trees in the way, I drive in and reverse out. Find a hand held (by the boss!) reversing camera best method to get out, but still takes at least 20 mins.
Better than paying for storage though, and the van is also to hand as a retreat.
saluti,
eddied

The first time I put our van in the garden, (see >>> HERE <<<, it took three attempts, one forward, and two backwards. Annie was behind, saying things like "YES" and "NO". The engine got very hot, the clutch started slipping, smoke started appearing from beneath the bonnet, but it was in (just).

I bought a camera / monitor from Ebay, convinced that it would be a problem getting the van in.

Some parks later, I regularly back it in on my own now, sometimes 1 attempt, usually 2 attempts, and it takes around 5 minutes.

Basically, arg, get some help initially, install a camera if you wish, but you actually get used to it.

Gerald
