I've ended up with a little one! - Guess everybody knows about my insurance dilemma Embarassed So I've had to have a MH I can run around in rather than a BIG one and a car. Still, Heigh-ho, no-claims we go for a couple of years then try again! Going to pay off the house instead.
I went out for my first run, and a man in the same type of van waved at me! In Hillsborough Sheffield on Saturday - so it's not all bad, making new pals! Got it from Oaktree. No big bargain, but not rip-off either. Did my homework, and same price as private ones on online site.
BUT, it's a Talbot. Help! from everyone who loves them. How do I get it to do 0-60 in less than a week, and WHAT is happening when it goes up hills??? Runs well on flat and normal inclines, either I've not got the hang of it's gearchange foibles, or it needs a man in a tune van! Maybe me expecting too much.
It's a '95 and whoever has had it has cared for it extremely well -think it used to live in Middlesborough.
Happily, Oaktree have seemed OK so far. This van didn't need their attention too much, as the past owner good. Got to go back for small bits only - Can't make the alarm ( Sparkrite ) work, and 12v red light on fridge is on when switch is in off position.
Also this will be out all winter - and running, so hints on how to protect underside much appreciated. Plus a clue about a good RAC approved garage ( not too expensive, as van older ) in Sheffield would be a plus.
Hope everyone is well/happy/prosperous on here right now !!!! - Best wishes, _ Helena x We're Coming For YOU P.S. It goes like one of these!

Hi,

Congratulations on new camper.

Talbots are OK, nothing amazing..... they drive OK. Mine is a 1990 2 litre petrol, it will keep up with traffic if you push it, and will just manage 70mph on the motorway, but it does have only 70 bhp, and if you are used to a car of any age from the last 15 years it will seem slow. Be prepared, if you do push the performance, to get only mid teens for MPG...... I average 18 using it around town. People who claim to get 30mpg are either telling porkies or drive at walking pace..... I can just get near that on a run....

You get used to the gearchange, clutch adjustment and linkage adjustment has to be spot on... I do this every service, which I do myself every 5000miles.

Parts for servicing are easy to get, Halfords don't stock much, but Partco/unipart who I used to work for can get all service consumable bits...

I use mine all year, and for going to and fro work, when I don't cycle... so far in 6 years I've clocked up 70000miles,it now has 100000miles on it, no problems other than routine stuff like brakes etc, only fault being a brake fluid leak, fixed in France on an aire after a visit to a l'Auto....

Only other thing to watch is RUST....

Hope that helps,

Daniel.

Many thanks Daniel, I was getting a bit panicky until you posted the info. Will shop about for a good local garage and paintshop, as my days of rolling about under vans were over 35 yrs ago. Will expect kind of performance you have stated + lots of miles! Have been driving a new Chrysler Voyager until retired a week or two ago. So very spoiled. Best regards, Helena x

Well done, Helena. Glad you've joined the happy throng.

Sorry, I don't know nuffink about your van, but you do see loads of them around on the road, so they must be OK.

Gerald

Hi and Welcome, we have a 1991 Talbot Harmony 2ltr petrol, we have had it 17 months, use it every day and love it. It is a bit sluggish at first but when warmed up on a long run it runs like a dream, Tony took a while to get used to the gears as well, we have had a few holidays in it and realy enyoyed ourselves, as for the hills try the ones in South Wales, they really slow you down, we have had 80mph on motorway but we were going downhill at the time Laughing , enjoy, Anne & Tony
