I collect my first motorhome, a 4 year old Chausson Welcome 50 on Saturday. Apart from a little apprehension about getting used to a bigger vehicle than my car (and will I be able to make that tight turn onto the drive?), I am really looking forward to it.
The van will not come with gas bottles. Can anyone advise on what's the most economical way to purchase gas? I have a portable butane fuelled fire at home which uses a 7.5Kg bottle. I usually exchange this at a local petrol station when I need a refill, but it's only occasionally used in winter. Is there a better/cheaper option? I heard someone mention they had a gas 'contract' with their motorhome retailer. Can anyone explain what that is?
Thanks,
Sandie

Hi Sandie

welcome to MHF and the world of motorhoming.

I have not heard of a contract for small use of calor only when people have LPG converted cars or buy in bulk to heat the house etc. But it will be interesting to hear from anyone who has.

Hi Sandie
The gas bottle you use at home will be fine for use in the m/h... check that the fittings are compatible. If you're going to use it overwinter I'd suggest changing to propane.

Check out bottled gas dealers in your area... some use a 20mmm, some use a 21mm fitting... then go for the best price...

There are two ways of looking at this.
If you use Calor bottles, it's pretty certain your gonna find an outlet to change an empty one where ever you go in the UK. The down side is that Calor is extremely expensive, especially the 6Kg propane bottles which fit most lockers, and dont "they" know this! Evil or Very Mad
If, on the other hand you get your bottles from a local A.N.other supplier, they're much cheeper BUT no one else will take them in exchange.
Depending on your consumption and storge space, the ideal solution would be one of each

Hi Sandi
Try your local builders merchant,a lot of them suppy calor. With the contract at one time you had to hire a bottle ,hence the contract and then you would just pay for a refill when you take it back.I suppy calor in my job and as we now get an excess of empties we dont bother but some of the camping shops still do.
