I know each man to his own taste and all that, but I have just been to the East Coast for a long weekend, and spent a night at Skegness sands CC site. Quite frankly, I'm not a fan of the CC's 'McDonalds- the same everwhere' philosophy, but I though this site was particularly awful:

-Allocated a site on a huge hardstanding gravel area, no privacy no greenery. More character in my local Tesco Car park.

-Obsession with rules and signs, especially that particulary patronising 'Everybody loves you dog...on a lead' one.

-This was all surrounded by a sea of static caravans.

-The surrounding town of Skegness just made matters worse.

-After my membership discount I paid £13 for the privilige.

My wife can be nervous about wildcamping, but vowed it was infinitely preferable to stopping another night. So that's what we did.

But what really foxed me was that it was full and everybody else seemed happy with it.

Anyway sorry about the whinge #Cussing out but writing this post at least gives me some satisfaction from my £13.

Anyway, thats my CARAVAN SITE HELL. Hesitant Devil

What's yours?

I don't know about hell, but certainly the worst - by a long chalk - was another site shared with statics.

Naze Marine at Walton on the Naze - see ** here ** - the touring pitches were on a sloping field, quite cut up, long grass, and some of the hookup posts had been hit and were sitting drunkenly. The worst bit for us was the toilet / shower area - dirty, in poor condition, and made from portacabins. The touring ptiches are next to the 'clubhouse' which we know from earlier experience sometimes has loud music going on late into Saturday night.

We spent about 10 minutes parked, before we upped sticks and drive back to reception. We asked for our money back, which couldn't be refunded at the time, but they have since sent us a cheque.

Maybe it's a "Holiday Park" thing, where tourers are treated as second class citizens? It reinforced our love of CLs, though.

Gerald

We were at the Norwich C & C C site two years ago. All grass, much on a slope. 'Twas wet when we arrived, and went as directed by the "manager" up the grassy slope. Half way up, he stopped us. We got stuck. He rounded up a posse of helpers, and managed to get going again. Directed to a different spot. Got stuck again. Finally, third time lucky. Then, only 2 showers for each gender. One large for disabled use, the other so small you would be disabled when finished.

No fault of the site, but in the middle of the night much noise from a work party on the railway cutting down overhanging branches. Chain saws at 3am are not my idea of fun.

Each to his own tastes, but I would prefer acres of tarmac (particularly now we have an RV) to getting stuck in grass. Sadly the whole coastline for miles round Skegness is full of static vans. Then again, I have heard of the way many view the sight of motorhomes and touring vans.

Fortunately we can't go back to Norwich as approach is via low bridges (one 10'3", the other 10'6"). And, from your description, I won't bother with Skegness CC.

ps keep whinging - it's good communication in this case.

I used to award stars in my log book but had to invent -1 star for Braceland Forestry Commission site in the Forest of Dean. Bear in mind though this was 1988 it may be fine now especially as the C&CC have 'taken over'.

Pitches weren't properly marked out it was all a jumble. It was a Saturday in late May and it rained throughout. We went for a walk in the rain with our dog to Biblins bridge, when we came back we were blocked on both sides and to the front by a caravan and tents. One had tied a flysheet guy to my van!!!

We eventually persuaded the nearest tent camper to move. At about 8.30pm a tree branch fell tearing the fabric side of the dormobile lift up roof. In the morning I asked the warden about the over crowding he said it always gets like that on a holiday weekend. He was still letting people in.

Well next day we sat around in the van reading Saturdays papers until at at about 4pm a panel van arrived completely blocking our exit he only moved when I revved up my van and said I was going to leave. So we drove on to the track and down to the entrance. I still had my roof up and as I went around closing it down and clipping it I found a small part of a tent flysheet attached to my rear door handle, pity it wasn't the whole tent Evil or Very Mad

Re Forestry commission sites
I remember making the mistake of staying in a New Forest one at Spring Bank Holiday many years ago when it seemed half of Souf London turned up, mostly in groups of half a dozen tents having never camped before Surprised

We always went there out of season after that Smile

I wonder how things will change now the C&CC are in charge

We have been there several times - a well kept and run site when Mike and his wife are there.

But we were unlucky enough to arrive literally as they were going off for a few days break - which meant we had to check in with Curly Knowlton - a name im sure will make some others shake in their shoes.

I think if we had arrived with a caravan all would have been fine - maybe.

Anyway in true CC fashion our complaint was treated with disdain - no written acknowledgement - just an answerphone message promising to deal with the matter + two site night vouchers - id much rather my complaint had been taken seriously.

Its not a nice feeling to receive a phone call from your wife who is being intimidated when you are some distance away.

Im not a "whinger" and our complaint was very justified - but it has to be put down to experience.

We love motorhoming - theres nothing like it!!

Happy Travels

I tend to agree about skegness sands being a bit on the dour side - but we still go a couple of times in the winter months. The old miners home casts a depressing shadow over the site and we would not dream of going in the summer months.

We kept our touring van in france and going to skegness always reminded us why it was where it was! - the van has now gone and its why the motorhome will spend alot of time on the continent.

Geoff

What an Abyssmal Site.
Litter everywhere, we had to pick up over 300 Cigarette ends (Yes they are litter!) before we could use the ground just outside our door, bags and papers flying around and that was the good part. The toilet facilities were attrocious cracked and missing tiles, mould, smell, etc etc and in peak summer season a fleeting visit by a teenager wearing a back pack (5 to 15 minutes) was all that was given in a bid to keep the place clean and presentable. Thats for M and F Facilities, Disabled facilities and Chemical Toilet disposal. That was the new block. The older block was not touched and was somewhat similar to a chrnobyl public toilet.
We stayed 5 days and didn't use the facilities at all, leaving 2 days early. Many others left early too. Complaints fell on deaf ears and one staff member even said "Well if you want clean facilities you should stay in a luxury caravan not a van!"
If your not going to be committed to a business then why bother.

Its not only the site but the whole place and it is not only Skegness which is
in a mess but other once pleasant resort seaside towns. See THIS story.
