Sorry to ask what may seem a stupid question, but can you plug a genny straight to MH hook up socket? Obliged for any answers, and I promise to make any further questions a little more interesting!!

Not stupid at all! Quick answer is yes, but best to start the gennie while not connected, then complete the hookup after the engine has settled down. Be aware that some older gennies (not the ones with inverters built-in like the new Hondas and Kippors) can damage the built-in charging unit in some motorhomes. No doubt an expert will be along soon with chapter and verse.

Hi all, I would ALWAYS recommend you turn your battery charger off if connecting a genny as i have changed literally hundreds of battery chargers blown up by genny's. The small suitcase genny's are generally not a regulated voltage. I have seen 326volts out of one. Generally you get what you pay for in terms of quality. To charge your battery always connect direct to the 12v output of the genny & you will be safer. Remember a battery charger depending on van is between £100 & £600, Steve
