Hello and greetings to all.
Just a quick query if I may?
I'm off to look at a camper this weekend, after many away from owning one. The van is a 1991 (J) Autohomes Avalon (Talbot) and I'm not sure what I should look out for regarding these types of vehicle. I'm also a bit unsure about the engine size. It has a 1900 Diesel engine, will be a drawback in anyway or should I hunt around for a 2.5. The present owner has stated the front seats are showing their age and the gear linkage is a bit sloppy. Are these things that can be fixed easily or should I be wary of things like this?
I am going for a van conversion rather than a coachbuilt as I also intend to use it sometimes for my small business of vinyl signs and graphics, so I sometimes I need to carry a made up signboard (or 2) up to 8 ft in length, so having back doors is a big adavantage (plus I can have a cuppa on site when fitting signs). I also do sidecar grasstrack racing so the main use for the van will be weekends away at race meetings. Here comes another question, would this van be able to tow a railer with my bike on it?
Sorry to make my first post sound like a begging letter, but as my Mum used to say..."if ya don't ask you don't get"
I look forward to any replies. Thanks in advance
Steve
I'm sure someone will come along with good advice but as no one has yet will tell you what I know.
A 2.5 litre engine would be better for the hills when fully laden. I would suggest you test drive it up a steep hill to see how it performs.
The gear linkage is a known issue and from what I read sometime ago in motorhome magazines it is easily sorted by a garage, perhaps not a flashy dealers but someone interested in these things. Sorry maybe flashy dealers are ok but usually smaller places are more accommodating.
I used to have a 2.5 (non turbo) symphony, good on the flat but struggled up the hills so unless the 1.9 is turbo'd it would probably be a little underpowered, no bother if you're not in a rush though.
Re the gear linkage, as Rita said its a well known problem, there is a company called delfin designs who have a redesigned linkage but its over £200.

Check the gross train weight for towing a trailer, she might struggle if its a heavy one.
I drove a 1.9 diesel (traffic) for 4 years without too much bother. HOWEVER..that was a minor conversion and not as heavy as a "proper job" The towing bit I'm finding is a minefield.....some say this and some say that...there is a way to work it out (I think) but someone more knowledgeable will tell you.
Welcome to MHF by the way!!
