I have searched the site and there are loads of good experienced comments around the subject and I have bookmarked numerous pages for future reference. In March we intend to travel to France by the tunnel £99 return with our Fiat Tribute. We joined the caravan club and I have just taken delivery of their Europe listings of sites. I noted that 99% of the sites they list do not open until at least April. We hoped to stop once over the sea and then travel a little further south perhaps a bit warmer. We would prefer to stop on sites with showers. I note various comments about Aires and so am not sure about them. We are going for 10 days. I am open to any suggestions but the better half likes a nice meal and a shower in a morning.May I also say having just joined what an informative site this is. PS any comments about not using the Tunnel:D
Welcome grumpyman - it's good to see you've subscribed so quickly.
Yes, there are fewer sites open early and late in the year but your Caravan Club guide does include a good number that are open all year. The price you have to pay for driving on empty roads is a little more research on where to stop but it's worth it.
You will enjoy it.
There will also be many posting after me.

do you mean the CC's brochure of sites, or the thick comprehensive guide (a big paperback volume)? There will be lots more listed in the full guide, but I noted that the 2007 version is not out until the spring (other people have been trying to get hold of one). If you prefer sites with decent facilities, camping cheques could be useful out of season - check out their website (not sure of it, but you should get it with a google)
We've used the tunnel a couple of times, very good, but normally more expensive than the ferries. At £99 you've got a good deal. People trying to travel yesterday on the ferries would have been grateful for the tunnel.

As far as I know, the only motorhoming Oxford United supporter in Bognor.
Another problem with going early is that even if you do find a site open it will not have all its facilities open. Showers yes but perhaps not a restaurant so try and pick somewhere you don't have to walk too far for facilities.

Hallo Grumpyman - I bet someone posts before this!
The CC book referred to is 824 pages long and called "Caravan Europe 1 - Sites Guide and Touring Handbook". I understand the 2007 version is due out in Jan. and is available to non- members at a higher price. I got mine from WH Smith's at the non-member price so didn't have to wait for it to be delivered. I must admit I am not a fan of the way the CC goes about its business although I am a member, but I must admit the book is v. good and worth the money.
Hope this helps and enjoy your hols.
By the way I agree with your wife about showers, but Aires are good for impromptu stops if you can't find a site and some even have access to showers! Don't believe what the CC says about Aires.

hi grummpyman,
as a hgv driver of many years experience driving in europe, you can always stop overnight at truck stops, always get a good hot meal, free parking & a hot shower(usually free of charge) with seperate facilities for men and women. always look for large resturaunts with pleanty of trucks parked outside, or showing the "le ruitier" logo. not like truckstops over here, they are always clean
