Good morning!
First off, thanks for the suggestions to my last post, all very useful.
A couple of questions. First off, does anyone have any thoughts on taking pot luck and not booking anything during the middle of may in the seine-maritime area ? I'm torn between risk and flexilbility.
Secondly, anyone have any info/thoughts on sites at Cayeux-sur-mur and Saint-Martin-En-Campagne. All info gratefully received.

Hi there,

We have travelled all around France out of season in the last few years and have had no problems with any camp sites, (we never book any) the only time you may have to is in high season July and August French holidays.
Also, have you thought about using camping cheques during this time? there are a number of campsites in France that accept them and they work out a lot cheaper than paying the normal camp site fees, I hope this helps you.

It depends on the kind of sites you want to use and the places you want to go to.

We have, up to now, been tied to school holidays but have never booked sites beyond the first night ( perhaps) if we arrive late in France.

If you want full-facility sites - ie pools, restaurants, entertainment and bar- in tourist hot-spots then I guess you might have to book but if you want municipal campsites in small villages and non-touristy towns then it is rare, even in high season, to find them full. Certainly I'd not anticipate any problems at all in May. That said, arrive in reasonable time - late afternoon- rather than later.

It might be worth looking at French public holidays before you go. Everything tends to shut- fuel and shops- and it is wise to be stocked up !
I seem to remember there are several in May.

Totally agree with Cavaqueen. We go across every May, June & September and the only thing we book is the Boat or Train.
The majority of sites are open and very quiet. I would suggest you brush up on your Dutch as most of the occupants on the sites are either British or Dutch pensioners. Camping cheques are very good also Municipal sites. We always give the site the once over before commiting ourselves.

Hi homerdog and welcome to MotorhomeFacts.

A small point but needs considering.
Camping Cheques are a good suggestion and we have used them ourselves. Good value.
Bear in mind that although they give cheap access to good quality sites out of season it may mean in the early part of the season that all the advertised facilities are not open.

Thanks for the replies. These cheques, are they available from the camping cheque web site.? are they only surrendered at there own sites, or can one use them at all sites where you see their logo. On their site, they are listed as £10.30 should it be euros? Thanks all!

With a decent site guide (eg the Caravan Club one) and a few Camping Cheques in my pocket, I wouldn't dream of booking anything in May.
Enjoy the freedom of the road and the ability to say "I wonder where that road leads."

Often the best places and sites are just lucky finds - that's what motorhoming is all about.

homerdog - I agree with all the above. We have been holidaying in France for the last sixteen years and with the exception of two times we have never yet booked. Only once were we disappointed by a site full situation! The exceptions were last year when two young friends joined us for a week and we not only wanted specific sites in the Dordogne and Lot areas, but we also wanted specific pitches. We could easily have gone on spec. if we took pot luck with the pitches.

I would emphasise the fact that you would do well to arrive earlyish if you want to be certain of a particular site, but there are so many options in France that the odd full up sign in the height of the season is not a disaster. In May you will have your choice without booking.

All the best for a great time - see you there!

Sue

Hi homerdog

Agree with everything that's been said but must add that last year we found quite a few Municipal sites not open until the 1st of June. We always found an alternative or else an Aire but thought it worth a mention.
