Just drove from Boroughbridge to Ilkley this morning - about 25 miles, Very windy, but not as bad as recently. Roadspeed was never above 60. Nevertheless, the properly rolled-up and secured awning picked up some nasty damage. The steel covering for the roller is bent and distorted.
Now we all expect problems when awnings are rolled out in high winds, but to get so much damage while the awning is all safely (I thought) rolled away astonishes me. Anyone else heard of or experienced this?
There must have been huge forces exerted by the wind - I can't even bend the steel back
Sorry to have seen what a mess your Awning now looks and I can't belive wind did that.I notice you have silver Tribute as I do. Can you tell me about the purchase as I am after one.Also have the roof rails been removed and was this any problem.Again sorry about your van i still can't believe it.

God knows how the wind could do that, hope you get some recourse though the Manufacturer, somehow I doubt it act of god ect !!

Last port of call will inevitabley be your insurers. I managed to claim a new one after mine was damaged by wind a couple of years ago. Mine was out at the time. Amazing what the wind can do looking at yours.

Tony, you claimed as accidental damage, which may affect your insurance premium.
The problem with this awning is due to a poor faulty product... something the installer or manufacturer should be responsible for.
Yes, it's really puzzling me ...... didn't have time or the facilities to do a proper inspection when I parked up (it's on a storage site, which makes everything more difficult), but I'll get the installers to look at it.
(Mind you - that's Brownhills in Newark, so that should be fun!)
Other than the wind though, I just can't think of another explanation, unlikely though that seems to be. It SEEMS solid as a rock and properly anchored - I can imagine it bending if one of the anchorages had come adrift. Maybe a better inspection will show something on those lines.
It's not as if it's been fitted recently - we've done about 2,500 miles since it was fitted last August when we got the van, with no problem at all.
I've even asked myself if I'd hit a tree branch or something, but there's no marks/scrapes. And I heard nothing when it happened, either. So I just keep coming back to the wind theory - it was strong enough this morning to push the van sideways on the road a bit. Maybe the awning housing acts like an aerofoil and the lift generated is enough to pull the housing up like that? It is very wing-like in cross-section.
But I suppose even if it was the wind, it should have stood up to it, shouldn't it? So I'll definitely take Snelly's advice and fully investigate the defective manufacture/installation route.
Grumpyman - I think my Tribute must be an older model than yours. It's a 2005 model, and pre-dates the roof bars etc. So I'm not too sure about how the Fiamma F65 would fit on the later models, but I'm sure that Fiamma would do an adapter kit for yours. Worth investigating - we've been really pleased with the awning (up to now!) and it's been invaluable for BBQ-ing underneath in the rain.
(Thanks to everyone for your moral support on this, by the way. OK, in the big scheme of things a broken awning is neither here nor there - but still, it can take the shine off your day! Having a bit of advice and sympathy has cheered Sue and me up no end).
Hasnt affected my policy at all Snelly. I claimed for a new £1000 zip awning from farmers union. The year after that they told me they couldnt provide breakdown cover through the RAC because I was over 3.5 tonnes and they hadnt realised they made a mistake so I had to swap to Safeguard. Policy cost was actually cheaper and better from them so I swapped, I even notified them that I'd made a claim for the awning and they werent bothered. So I won that one. Now I have full breakdown cover for an over 3.5 tonne vehicle cheaper than before and still carried out by RAC I think but their commercial van version I think they told me.
