Hi,
I have just bought my first Motorhome (a Mobilvetta) which I am very happy with. I have been doing lot's of reading (here and elsewhere) as I am planning for my first trip and one of the thoughts I have been having is that when I stay at one of these dedicated sights what is the etiquette for reserving your sight when you go off for the day. I'm sure someone mentioned in one of the things I have read that they leave a "pitch taken" sign in their bay when they go away for the day. What does the community think about this? Is it OK or does it seem a bit too much like the German's and their beach towels on the pool chairs? If it is an acceptable thing to do, why is it that I can't find anywhere to buy one? Do you know anywhere?
Yes it acceptable - and usual. CC sites sell them for about a fiver, and specifically ask you to use them. They are also advertised in the mags, for a bit more i think
Hi Paul and welcome to the best motorhome forum around. We're relatively new ourselves, and although we caravanned and tented before there's just no comparison to the freedom and sense of adventure a motorhome brings. You'll love it!
Nobody will mind if you mark your pitch while away - you can buy signs either from the Caravan Club or through the small ads in the back of all the MH mags, or simply make your own. Some people leave buckets, windshields and that sort of thing to let others know you'll be back, although there have been rare, and sad, cases where these things get nicked. Most unlikely though, and never happened to us. Yet....
If there's plenty of free space (such as on a CL or CS) we don't bother and simply park up somewhere else if 'our' spot has been taken. There will be times on the more formal sites where specific pitches are allocated to each visitor, in which case you shouldn't need to leave any marker.
We had a spare number plate made up and mounted it on a piece of wood, we leave that on the pitch. No one would be interested in taking it but it makes it clear that we are returning.

I think that is essential that you leave a sign or some other indication that a pitch is occupied, particularly on Caravan Club sites. The reason is that on the Caravan Club sites, generally, pitches are no longer allocated on arrival like they were years ago. Nowadays when people first check in, they are usually told by the wardens to go and find a pitch and then return to reception and let them know. Sometimes it is also necessary to pick up a toilet block key or gate key which are also labelled to pitch numbers. Often, people (usually caravanners) arrive, find a pitch, start to set up, put up awnings, connect water and electrics, etc., and then later go to reception to inform the wardens of their pitch and collect any keys.
It is only then that they find out that a pitch has already been allocated to a camper/motorhome and it has been known for people to refuse to move and a row has developed with the wardens. It has also been known for the original occupants of the pitch to return in their camper/motorohome just as the caravanner has finished putting up the awning, etc., and a row has developed all before the wardens even know what has happened.
I realise that it is possible to check out every pitch at reception and make a note of all which are occupied or unoccupied, before you select, but it can be a tedious job. One of my worries is that if I only leave my sign, which at the moment is only the small (12" x 6" approx.) green Caravan Club sign, it might 'go missing' (and never to be recovered) and there is someone else on the pitch who denies all knowledge. I think it is just a communication excercise really and minimising potential rows or disagreements.
