Hi Everyone,
We have just got a eldis autoquest 180 and are planning on taking it to Scotland for the february half term school holidays in search of snow!. We are brand new to motorcaravanning but have looked on in envy during the last 5 years of driving our picasso around europe on our annual holiday when we have had to stay in eurocamp caravans. We have two children who are as excited about it as we are and are unable to wait until the warmer months to go out in it, hence our plan to head to Fort William. Can anyone give us any tips about campsites in that area that may be open in february or good places to go? Is it necessary to book sites at this time of the year? and any other hints and tips about using the van in the cold, and what will be useful to take with us, will be most welcome.
Thank you in anticipation

Hi Joanne and Phil

Welcome. I hope you'll love it and will get hooked as quickly as most of us do, also that you'll find this forum helpful.

Have you considered Glenmore in the Cairngorms, it's open all year. (Or was last time I heard.) Don't know about the Ben Nevis /Glen Nevis site but try a search on google.

Regarding the van why not read these for starters and post away here anything you think we can help you with. Good luck, Ruth

Hi

Welcome to the site and welcome to motorhoming.

I think I would start with the local tourist offices etc for campistes and make good use of the internet.

Snow is not guaranteed, so you may need to have a back up plan - i.e. other things to see and do. Again, I suspect that the internet will be able to offer webcams so you can see what is going on where etc.

The 180 is, I believe a fairly large van and so you may need to let the site know this when you book. I had a Compass 400 and thought it was great. If you do not have blown air heating, I suggest leaving the toilet door ajar slightly overnight to help keep the loo area warm.

If you are camping in subzero temperatures, I would also leave the drain tap open and drain your grey/washing/washing up water etc into a bucket. I speak from experience of my grey water freezing solid in Italy last year.

Russell

We've just come back from Braemar where the CC site (called The Invercauld) has a well deserved excellent reputation, and all kitted out with bootdrying room and gear drying room. We were also trying our first M/H out in winter conditions. It was GREAT! We had 3-4 inches snow, horrendous wind (as did everyone last week, I think) and we were very cosy - great walking during the day, and a rosy glow in the van! A wee oil filled elec radiator on permanently to keep the temp from going too low is a good idea.

I'd suggest booking is not likely to be essential unless everyone's mid-term comes at the same time, which is unlikely. If your main objective is snow, I'd recommend not making your mind up til just before setting off, and then checking the forecast/snow conditions at Braemar (for the Glenshee area), Glenmore, as suggested above (for Cairngorm), and Fort William (for Ben Nevis and Aonach Mor). I'm fortunate enough to live in Grantown, just a hop and a skip from Cairngorm, and you'd be surprised how one area can have great snow, and another little or none, although as the crow flies it may seem nearby.

Have fun!, John

Why not try Kent - the forecast for tonight looks good Smile . Doubt it would last until half term, though! Rolling Eyes

After Spending the Christmas Holidays in Austrian Alp to be assured of Snow (AND GOT NOTHIING MORE THAN A HEAVY FROST) its hard to guarantee snow anywhere. Even the North Pole seems to be melting.

That said can we extend a hearty welcome to you and we look forward to hearing about your 'Highland Adventure'

The way the climate has been this year you might need your bikini!

Thanks for all your tips and the links. We know that there might not be snow when we go and so are taking bikes and hiking boots with us too. We live in a valley so our kids rarely see decent snow.

Hi Jonev! Welcome along!

Mention has been made of webcams around Scotland. There is a good one, showing live video, at an outdoor gear shop, near Loch Alsh. Try the following: 914outdoor.co.uk

It's a fascinating site, full of useful information.

Today, it shows snow on the Glen Shiel Ridge, the Cuillins on Skye...

I wish I was there now!

Best wishes from UncleNorm.
