Hello,

we are 2 adults and 3 children (4 and under, 4,2 and 6mnths) who are thinking of going fulltiming (brave I know!). Has anyone got any experience of travelling with so many small children? We are not sure if bunks or a double bed at the back would be the best option. We are going to need a seperate area for the evenings ie the lounge for us. Has anyone got any tips of sleeping arrangements for the baby? We could also do with a garage so a lounge at the back might not work.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Hi

I would suggest bunks. I have a fixed bed at the back and the plus point is it is almost the same size as a bed in a house, it is always ready to climb into but it does take up floor space.

For some layouts of Hymers, look here www.dmiuk.com or at www.hymer.com and download a "ALCOVE" version brochure. Whilst these two links will give only info about Hymers, you will see many layouts.

Greetings,

Petra, I have a Hymer C644U 6 berth and 6 belted seats with a rear lounge and dinette, which gives us separate lounge/diner, or lounge bedroom area, although it does not have a garage it has a huge underfloor storage area where I can fit a wheelchair, scooter, three big storage boxes, tables, chairs, etc etc.

It is certainly very handy for separate living areas and a layout that took us a long time to find.

We had bunks in our last van but could not utilise them because we needed the space of the lower bunk for storage and we could not climb ont the top bunk!

Best of luck in your search.

Hi

We too have 3 children, slight older, 12, 8 and 4.

We have a six berth (will in theory sleep 7). Has seven belted seat points too (always important to check how many belted travelling seat belt points - as doesn't always align with sleeping capacity).

We have fixed bunk beds at rear on side- lower one can be lifted to create a garage area. Top bunk is hard to get in and out of for adult. Although children manage it well enough, even 4 year old who can put the net guard up himself.

Large storage area runs laterally under rear of van. Will fit most things, although length is restricted by spare wheel being in there.

Whatever van you choose there will be always be compromises - with a family of five. We haven't found the absence of a lounge a real issue, as kids tend to want to site at tables to play games, draw etc. All five inside for any length of time sends everyone stir-crazy anyway.

Hi, we have been through this situation over the past year or so and have been through three vans in the process... Our first was an old hymer with bunks at the back but that was a stepping stone whilst we financed a newer van.

Our second we bought in April last year was a C-Class Euramobil 690VB with the half garage and bunks along one side at the back. We have three kids with the youngest only 14 months old now so we needed a solution for the baby whilst the other two slept in the bunks and us in the overcab... our solution was to turn the cab area into a baby's room by fitting a removable steering wheel and swivel to the drivers seat, we then had a board made that fitted across the two seats in the cab and we put a travel cot on the top... this worked fine but.... our eldest who is 16 stopped coming and I wanted a full garage to carry a scooter (and my fishing kit and my skis and.......) so..

We now have an A-Class Euramobil 810 HBL which has two single beds at the rear over the largest garage you ever did see. Baby has a travel cot on one single bed and middle one has the other - we sleep at the front in the drop down. This works fine for us and we have no jigsaw beds to make unless the eldest decides to come again (but then there is always canvas!!!).

We would suggest that a C-Class with a rear double (separated for the two older kids with a bed guard) and a cab conversion as we had for the baby would work best but have a look - you may take some time finding the idea van.... We now know that internal layout is everything for family camping (especially if you are thinking of full time) so look lots and think laterally.

Good luck...

Seagull.
