I'm Jane. My hubby and I bought our first MH last November, it's 1995 Fiat Ducato, maybe a bit oldish by we love it. The thing is the previous owners put in a double socket. We know that the voltage is 12 so how, if and when can we use it. Will we blow ourselves up if we plug a lamp hairdrier etc into it.
We could really use some advice on this one. I hope I don't sound TOO stupid.
Thank you in advance.
Is it a double socket - like a white one you expect to find at home?
If so, the chances are it will work only when you are on hook up. I have several 3 pin style sockets in the van, and they provide power for the TV etc, only when I am hooked up to the mains.
Let us know if this is the case.

The way you've described it you are looking at a 230/240V socket which will only work when you're on hook up, as Russell says. I wouldn't try plugging any 12v equipment into it otherwise you really will have a blowup.
You should be able to use "domestic" appliances - so a "normal" kettle etc etc should be OK. I dont want to confuse you but if you do take an electric kettle, a 500watt or a 1000 watt one is ideal. Some of the 3000 watt household ones could trip the supply.
You may also have in your van something that looks a bit like a cigarette lighter socket - this is a point where you can plug in 12V appliances.

I suggest you and hubby book into one of our rallies and there will be more than enough helpers to guide you through the bits and bobs of motorhoming. Don't be shy - we have all had to learn at sometime or other.
I was about to sugest the same as Aaronsdad, although if you are comfortable with it, put your home town on your profile and you may find a friendly MHFer who lives local to you may volunteer to pop round a share their knowledge with you and hubby.
Just a thought
Bill
