Hi;

We haven't fully decided yet but one option for a 5 week holiday starting this September is to go down through Slovenia and Croatia to Dubrovnik, ferry across to Bari, then back up through Italy.

Would we get away with a bit of discreet wildcamping in Slovenia and Croatia or is it a definate no-no?

Anyone used Jadrolinja ferries from Dubrovnik to Bari before?

TIA

Pete.

We have a member who lives in Slovenia - I think her user name is Cilkad and in a post replying to me she did indicate it would be Ok to pitch in a restaurant car park etc - after having dinner there!

From my research, I do not think wild camping is "totally acceptable". The Go motorhoming books states "free parking is not allowed", and for Croatia, the book states it "is punishable by law".

I am heading off to Slovenia (eventually) and am staying at www.campingkamne.com - one of a small number that is open at the moment.

There is a thread under my name somewhere about Slovenia.

Camps will be open in Slovenia in September - if you tell me the route, I can suggest some places. We have done wildcamping although officially it is not allowed. Check public parking places and if there is no sign that it is not allowed for MHs, you can park and sleep but you are not allowed to put the chairs and table out as this is then regarded camping.
In Croatia it will probably be a problem as September is still quite busy. We were on Croatian coast this weekend (we saw the first swimmer), and we were on a parking place just next to the beach and there were no problems as the season has not begun yet.

Rapido, are you coming to Slovenia?

Hello

Yes I am coming but not sure when - I think maybe next week. I have been having some repairs to the motorhome and need another! I will send an email when I come.

Hi peejay

How can you get 5 weeks holiday, I'm jealous! We'd love to go down to Dubrovnik; we met several brits who were going that way when we went to Istria / Slovenia in Sept04. Won't it be getting a bit wet after the end of September in the Balkans? Or would you be back across in to Italy then?

Hi Cilka and thanks for the reply and info about wildcamping, probably best to stick to sites, don't want to upset the locals. No real route yet, we were just going to hop across Slovenia to get to Croatia but it seems if we did that then we'd be missing a lot of your country which looks beautiful, so we might divert a bit for a few days and explore a bit more.

Mike, it took some grovelling/wangling I can tell you! Only thing is i'll have hardly any leave left for the rest of the year, so i'll have to do even more grovelling. Never mind, it'll be worth it.

How about Jadrolinja ferries anyone had experiences with them, good or bad??

Hi Peejay

Slovenia is well worth more than a quick look especially the north around the Julian Alps. We should have spent longer there last May but the weather was rather wet. There aren't lots of campsites about 40 in total and a handful of stellplatz. You can get some useful guides in English from their excellent tourist website www.slovenia.info (won't let me insert a link??)

Check your insurance as Croatia wasn't covered for our motorhome or breakdown insurance policies with Safeguard.
Also have a look at the journey to Dubrovnik as the coast road passes a few miles through Bosnia Herzegovina

Should be a good trip at that time of year

Steve
