Hi,

Anyone got any views or experiences on sending an RV to a dealer for them to sell on your behalf.

I have been in touch with a few of them and they've all got their different prices and agreements to sign. (some obviously want to charge the earth)

Not sure what to do! Confused

Hi

The advantages as I see it....

Dealer pays for advertising/website etc etc

Dealer can offer finance and PX

Dealer can offer warranty

Downside - I am guessing 10% of the final price as a minimum???

Hi Anita,

It is always a very easy way to sell and gives your vehicle a higher profile than you could achieve by yourself.

Dealers will often ask what is your minimum acceptable price. Make sure that it is not your minimum because they will come back and knock it down when they get a buyer! Guaranteed!

The important issue is to be sure it is a bona fide dealer with insurances to cover, as you will probably not want to continue to insure or tax the vehicle. They must not be a garage who is likely to go out of business as your vehicle whilst belonging to you may be difficult to recover.

However, all in all it is an easy way of selling and particularly when the vehicle is of large value.

For what it is worth I sold my last two cars which where not part exchanged in the same manner and only lost a small percentage in what I was prepared to sell for.

Regards

Chris

I think there are enough "Free" advertising websites around that you can place ads on like the Dealers do, you can get a good coverage yourself.
If you can create a webpage and put tags into aid the search engines you will get far better coverage. Placing an advert on Ebay will also put the vehicle in the public arena quickly - it may not sell but enquiries will flow post auction close.

The problem 'overdrive' is you are not a dealer when selling a vehicle, you do not have the facilities that a dealer has and people do not come to your door to look at vehicles. They only respond to an advert!

You also have no idea who the buyer is and if they are trying to stitch you up.

eBay is good for a high profile and exceptionally good to find a potential dodgy buyer!

Most of the time when selling something we are looking for a simple and straightforward method of selling and guess what? When we are buying we are looking for the same thing! Amazing that isn't it!

Of course some people will only deal with personal sales - oh they are often crooks! But not always of course. However, the majority of people do not like to deal privately and want the extra facilities like guarantees and finance that a dealer can offer!

You may have noticed that Anita has been trying hard to sell her RV both on various internet sites and eBay. This is the next obvious step for her! What's more it is very likely to lead to success as long as she gets the price right!

Regards

Chris

You need to be absolutely sure who owns the sale proceeds when the vehicle is sold. There are stories where a dealer has sold a motorhome (or a car), collected the sale proceeds and then gone into liquidation. In the circumstances I read about some years ago, and which are admittedly rare, I understand the private owners did not get the sale proceeds and had to claim as unsecured creditors.

I am no legal eagle but I guess it has something to do with whether the moneys are kept separate in trust for you, as say a solicitor will do when selling your house, or passed through the dealers books as an ordinary sale.

Thanks guys for your advise. As some of you know I have been advertising it for some time now on quite a few Websites. I have had some interest, but no sale as of yet. Sad Even lower the price twice.

I have spoken to Brownhills who are very local to me, but they want to much commission - 10% of sale.

Some of the smaller dealers charge a set price which is more inviting, but like some of you have pointed out ,I need to check ownership should anything happen to the dealer whilst they have the vehicle.

Good point to about making sure I get the price right with them as well.

I think I now need to go along the road of using a dealer as time is passing and that lovely RV is just sitting there when someone could be enjoying it.

Anita
