I can't remember which thread mentioned looking for one of these gadgets, but basically they are made by....
Microcustom Ltd, the product is called a Meter Maid and Microcustom are on 01473 780724.
One end of the gadget plugs into the mains supply, and the other into your mains extension lead. The digital read out will tell you how many units of electricity you have used.

There are various variations of these available Plug-In Mains Power and Energy Monitor. They would need a couple of adaptors if you were on site as they are for 13A sockets, and not weather/wheel proof, but are far cheaper. You could certainly use one at home to check your power consumption.

If you pay for hook up You use whatever you need, I assume!
(I know you should never assume..as it makes an ass out of U & me)

I use mine at home to check the actual energy consumption of the appliances in the house. Energy prices are rising and we have climate change etc on the horizon. I would also like to build my own house and generate my own electricity, and learning to minimise consumption means I don't need to generate so much, and generation is expensive. Bit like living in a van really, where you have limited power available if you don't have a hookup.
It's interesting to actually monitor the power consumed by appliances. My bread machine is rated at 500w, but only draws this much for a short time. Most of the time it's resting, so it actually uses very little energy.
I would use the monitor to check the consumption of the various equipment in the van while it's connected to the mains so I can work out ways to maximise battery life when it's not. If I use the van in the way I would like to, I may well be without mains hookup quite a lot.
