Having been researching the purchase of my first motorhome for around a year now, I had decided that buying from a dealer was a more secure option and worth the inevitable extra dollop of dosh. However, I have begun trawling the classifieds in desperation to find my chosen vehicle, a Devon Conversions Monte Carlo or an Adria Twin, by the way (in case you have one lying around) as my particular choices seem thin on the ground.
Having just had my credit card details stolen, I am feeling a bit wobbly about handing over my hard-earned pennies to anyone. My bank picked up on the dodgy transactions fairly quickly but I do not know when or how I was robbed and, if they know, the Bank isn’t saying either. I am now carrying a wad of cash around with me and it’s very odd paying for things with real money. This is just as risky, of course, but at least it is a finite sum and if I do get mugged, I will be able to yell at my assailant, ‘Rotten scum-bag, go and earn it like I have had to do!’ or probably something even less polite.
Anyway, if I do make a private sale, has anyone had any experience of getting vehicles checked if stolen (or for mechanical soundness, come to that)? I have read about this somewhere. After all, I do not want to post a picture of me standing proudly beside my new van and someone writing in, ‘Hey, that’s mine!!’
Before handing over the money, have a HPi check done, it can be done over the phone or online and will tell you if it is the correct vehicle, not prev written off, has outstanding finance, is stolen etc etc...
Snelly is right, get an HPI check done. Check the agreement with the HPI company but I think you will find that if they say the vehicle is clear and it isn't then they will cover your losses.
If you do not do the check and the vehicle turns out to have finance on it or is stolen then you will find the finance company or insurance company actually own the vehicle and they can come and recover it. You will then have to recover your money, if you can from the person who sold it to you illegally.
Remember though that 1000s of vehicles are sold every week privately and the problems are few and there are many succesful deals to be had.
Remember hpi checks will not pick up change of body to motorcaravan. So if a stolen van has been given the vin no. of an old builders van, which is then changed to motorcaravan, it wont pick it up.
i bought my van from a private sale and did the following
had a hpi
went to see the van at the address (if they offer to meet you half way walk away from it ) checked the v5 for address and vin number
only had 2k on me for a deposit
i'm a member of the aa so paid them to do a vehicle check
ask for it to have new mot supplied by the seller
paid the £23k in cash and had three people with me at their house with the van parked out side
