I have been following various threads about the fitting of a rack for a scooter or small motorbike, and the advice on weight calculation etc is very valuable.

But my motorhome, like most I guess, has no tow-bar fitted today. I never have any intention of towing a car or trailer, and that makes me more inclined to buy a rack that can fit directly onto chassis extenders mounted to the van. I met a guy at an aire in France last week. He had an Autotrail with a great scooter rack that looked just the job.

But while it is easy to find companies that make racks that fit directly to a tow-bar, it seems very hard to find anyone who makes up a custom rack that requires no tow-bar. Some of the posts mentioned that there are companies out there, but no names were mentioned.

can anyone suggest one or two companies I could try, or is it just best to go get the tow-bar fitted anyway, and then have the wider access to the standard racks that are already available.

I have this one "lying around"..
Bought off ebay last year. But we changed vans and decided against getting a scooter...
Owes me £95 if anyone interested, can send more photos.
Has 2 mounting plates that i assume can be fitted to a chassis extension or modified towbar.

My recollection is that you would be spolied for choice getting racks on chassis extensions on the continent, but it's rare in Blighty. If you are going to Germany I have some pointers.

Thanks,

Tonka - what you have available is probably what I need, and the price is very fair, but until I research my needs more, I can't be sure just what rack is best.

Dave - my van is a German make anyway (late model Euramobil), which I bought myself in Germany and brought back. We will probably be taking it to Germany at least once or twice a year, so any contacts you do have could be very interesting.

Out of interest I have measured the distant between the mounting brackets. 49" and thats almost the same as the chassis on our Fiat autotrail. Non Alko version..
It does have the extra loading ramp and has been cleaned and re-painted since the picture shown. Looks a lot better...

I have looked into this as I have te same dilemma. I also reckon I can save a lot of wieght over a towbar and bar mounted rack.

I intend to run two 50mm box section tubes parallel to the chassis extension. These extend 500mm past the back. A section of the galvanised tray used on bike trailers (bought off ebay) will carry the scooter. Another section to load it.

I have checked the calculations and the tube should carry twice the weight, which should allow for dynamic forces. I will weld up brackets that will allow the tube to be bolted at the start and end of the chassis extension.

On my van, all the kitchen is in the middle. At the back is passenger seating that is never used, so there should be enough weight capacity for a 150kg scooter.

The handlebars will be held buy strapping to the fiamma rear rack downtubes.

I will wire in a trailer electric socket hidden under the van to a trailer board fixed to the end of the tubes.

Reckon the whole lot will come in at less than £100.

Andy,

If I had gone the chassis extension route and gone to Germany this was the one I fancied, in Bremerhaven.

PWS in Poole will make you one to specification - I had a long conversation with them last week and was suitable impressed - I am going to visit later this month to be measured up....

I like the idea of the platform and was advised to go that route as it could be used for scooter, pushbikes or backbox.
