Well what a complete twit I am - I've just broken all my own rules and carried on deleting stuff without concentrating
I was trying to be clever (first mistake) and organising all the contacts in the address book into Groups. I did that bit fine but then thought I might as well delete all the contacts left in main contacts folder. I checked to see that this did not delete the names from the Groups and it didn't so felt confident to delete away until I suddenly notices my Groups had gone as well. I stopped in time to save 2 of the Groups but 3 are gone and I'm desperate.
I looked in recycle bin but they aren't there - have I lost them for good?
Anyway can I undelete them or am I stuffed
I don't have any automatic back up facility and last time I tried to do a Nero type back up I got very confused so have no idea if I actually saved anything onto disc or not - sorry, I know thats soooo bad.

Not sure but might a "system restore" re-instate them?
been there done that. OH says no they wont restore but he could be wrong. However we recently bought a new laptop with Vista and the first tme we logged into outlook express a load of lost email adresses and messages were suddenly back. These were lost due to computer crash but on a different computer & operating system think it was xp.
A little tip. I dont understand back up systems either. I keep a copy of my stuff on a seperate small harddrive and also copy all contact list and paste into a word or notepad document. Not much help now I know but may be useful for the future.

Oh thanks - I feel better now, knowing someone else done it as well
I am just about to buy one of those small hard drive gizmo's so hopefully wont be in so much trouble in future (who am I kidding??)
I was trying to delete all the rubbish that gets saved in contacts and thought I was being tidy but ended up worse off. However I am now going through and saving just the contacts I actually want from my saved e-mails so maybe it's not quite so disastrous after all.
I also misunderstood the purpose of 'Groups'. I thought I could click on a group and select a contact from within the group to email. BUT it seems that if you select the group it sends email to everyone within the group...DOH!!
Sometimes the more I know the less I know
Thanks for response - it's so good on here isn't it?
Before my wife got her own lappie she spent ages on mine building a Christmas card list on an excell spreadsheet. Some time later I decided my lappie was due a re format. So off I went along with her spreadsheet!!! she was not best pleased. So I decided she should have her own lappie on which she again spent some time re doing her spreadsheet. About a week after she finished I discovered I had saved the original onto a CD. I think i'm still paying the price.
I have two 'groups' in my address book - all those contacts are also individual entries, it does it automatically.
The advantage of the 'group' is that I can send an email to everyone in there with one click.
Don't forget to use BCC though, lots of people don't like their address being forwarded to all and sundry.
Do you use the facility of just starting to type the name of your contact in the 'to' bar and the programme picks their name out for you?
Hope you get all your contacts back.
I have just 'exported' my address book to another file on my computer, just to be on the safe side so thanks for reminding me of what can happen here.

Good point about using BCC when doing email forwards.
Just one of my pet hates is seeing my email address on
a long list where up 50 people can see my email address and fowward
it to others. Great way for the spam harvesters....
Are they in outlook express. If so go to deleted folder and then tools then recover deleted items. Thats a tip for anyone who uses express and deleted the stuff in the deleted folder. its not deleted yet.

A tip for future reference...set up a free Gmail account, then Import your Outlook Express address book into your Gmail. That way, its always available to you from any PC worldwide.
